CALEB’S POV
It broke me to see Aurora crying like this. I was tempted to attack those vile flamers and teach them a lesson but Aurora needed me.
“I think some dreams do come true. I wanted to hug you, from the day you saved me…”
Her words turned my heart into mush. I tightened my grasp around her and said, “ You don’t have to go there ever again. We have Aslan, so we can keep giving you his blood.”
“But, Caleb…” She started saying something but I placed my finger on her lips. I didn’t want her to worry about technical details.
My head was buried in her shoulder and her phone was in the back pocket of her jeans. So, when her phone buzzed I was the first to see the notification.
Aurora didn’t seem to have noticed the beep. I took out the phone to give it to her but halted when I saw Tyson’s name.
I felt like a bolt of lightning had struck me when I read the message, ‘You did your job well. We freed Aslan and that dog didn’t even notice. Now, get out of there.’
What the H*** F***! Was this all a ruse? How could she play with my feelings?
My blood boiled and my jaws clenched in anger. I shoved her away and waved the phone in front of her.
Her face turned pale as she looked at the message. She grabbed my hand and tried to explain, “It is not what you think…”
My ears rang and her voice droned in the background. She had the audacity to explain after betraying me.
I grasped her by the shoulder and gritted out, “I treated you so well, Aurora. I kidnapped Aslan so that I can save you from being tortured. Hell! I even killed Lina to save you and this is what I get….”
Her face turned paler than the ghost. She hiccuped and begged, “Caleb, please give me a chance. I can explain everything…”
I wasn’t going to give her another opportunity to toy with my feelings. Lina was right. I should have never let this bond take a grip over me.
I drew in a deep breath, looked straight into her eyes, and said in a cold voice, “I, Alpha Caleb of Crescent Pack reject you as my mate.”
A weight lifted off my shoulders and I sensed the connection between us snap. I was finally free. There was a dull ache in my heart but I was sure it would fade with time.
Before I was tempted to take revenge, I pushed her away and said, “Go back to those flamers and remember you are not welcome here.”
Then I turned on my heels and stomped into my chamber without even glancing at her. She was nothing to me now.
AURORA’S POV
When Caleb rejected me I felt an intense pain sear through my heart. I had lost something that I never knew was mine.
The guards dragged me outside and left me alone. Keeping my eyes fixed on the road, I trudged along. Caleb’s words kept playing in my mind and I wandered far away without realizing it.
The hair on my back stood and my heart started racing when I sensed a presence behind me. Adrenaline coursed through my veins and my mind cleared.
I slowed down but kept walking. Now that I paid attention, I could hear faint footsteps behind me. There were at least three to four people.
I looked around discreetly. The road was desolate. I knew there was no use stalling. They would catch up with me sooner or later.
Drawing a deep breath, I turned around to find a young lady flanked by two muscular men. They stopped in their tracks and grinned at me.
The lady slung her arm around the man to her right and said, “How do you think we should kill her?”
The veins on his forehead bulged and his eyes turned red as he growled, “I want to tear her apart limb by limb…”
My heart started pounding against my ribs. I wondered why he wanted to kill me when I didn’t even know him.
The man to the left shifted his weight from one foot to another and said, “Alex, I think we shouldn’t go against Alpha’s order.”.
The girl snorted and said in a determined voice, “Don’t make me feel ashamed of you, brother. She has to be punished for causing the death of our teacher.”
I watched them incredulously. How the hell had I caused the death of their teacher when I didn’t even know them?
I watched in horror as the three of them took an attacking stance. Their heavy breathing, furious expression, and determined eyes indicated only one thing. They were here for the kill.
I turned around and started running as fast as my legs would carry. The muscles of my legs ached and my lungs burned with lack of oxygen but I forced myself to continue.
A bone-chilling growl echoed behind me causing me to turn reflexively. This was a huge mistake.
Three wolves were closing on me instead of people. They were large, almost the same height as me. My eyes widened and my jaws hung open. I wanted to flee but my legs wouldn’t move. I stood there like a statue as the wolves closed in on me.
A scream escaped my mouth and I shielded my face with my arms when the wolf in the center plunged at me.
I waited for its sharp teeth to pierce me, I waited for the pain but nothing happened. I lowered my arms and cracked opened my eyelids to find that I was alone.
A car came to a screeching halt beside me and I was pulled inside before I could realize what was happening.
