I turned around, my brown eyes meeting with her blue ones. We just stood there staring at each other for a while.
What was her name? What was her name?
She broke the silence, "Katherine? It's you right?" She visibly started to panic when I didn't respond, "Oh my god, you're not Katherine, are you? I'm so sorry I tend to forget faces. I'm Hayley."
Right, her name is Hayley.
I chuckled, "Calm down, I'm Katherine."
She breathed a sigh of relief, "Oh thank God, why didn't you just say so?"
I awkwardly laughed it off, I went over a billion sentences in my head but I couldn't find a way to tell her I forgot her name without being a bit rude.
She suddenly looked me up down as if she was just registering my appearance.
Why does everyone keep doing that...seriously?
She gave me a puzzled look, "Why are you here?"
I ran my fingers through my hair, attempting to untangle it, "I was supposed to have an interview for the assistant position, but I'm too late."
She tilted her head to the side and checked her watch, "I'm sure my mom rescheduled the interviews from 11 am to 12 pm. Who told you this?"
I pointed accusingly at the bitch I spoke to at the front desk, "She did."
Hayley stormed to her desk and she automatically greeted her, "Good day Miss Faux, I hope you are well, how may I assist you today?"
Hayley grabbed my arm and dragged me beside her, "Did you speak to my friend?"
The receptionist gulped and dared not to meet my eyes, "I-I think so, I speak to many people during the day so I'm not sure, maybe it was Amelia who spoke to her. "
A lady who looked to be in her mid-thirties suddenly popped up from under the receptionist's desk with a broom, "Me?"
Confusion was written in bold all over her pale face, I guess she's Amelia.
Hayley cocked her eyebrow, "Why would Amelia be doing what is supposed to be your job?"
The receptionist opened and closed her mouth like a fish, unable to formulate a sentence to use as an excuse.
Hayley dropped her hand hard on the desk and she flinched, "I don't like when people lie to me, did you or did you not speak to my friend?"
She looked down and spoke almost in a whisper, "Yes ma'am, I spoke to her."
Hayley smiled, "What did you speak to her about?"
The first time I saw her like this was when she accused me of stealing her purse, I shuddered at the memory.
Being in jail was not fun.
The receptionist started to mumble under her breath.
"Speak up!" Hayley demanded.
I hate people fighting my battles but I must say, this is entertaining.
The receptionist took a breath before speaking, "Your friend inquired about the interview for the assistant position and I told her the interviewer was no longer accepting candidates." She whispered that last part.
"Are you aware that the interview time has been rescheduled?" Hayley inquired.
The receptionist nodded, "Yes ma'am."
Hayley took out her phone, "What's your name sweetie?"
The receptionist gulped, "It's Jennifer, Jennifer Samuda. You're not going to fire me right?"
Hayley smiled, "I don't have that sort of power, you don't report to me."
Jennifer breathed a sigh of relief.
Hayley dialed a number and placed her phone on speaker. Based on the smug look on her face, I guess things are about to get a lot more interesting.
The phone rang for a while before someone answered in an insanely groggy but sexy voice, "Yea?"
"Why does it sound like you're still in bed?" Hayley asked as we heard yawns in the background.
"Because I am," he responded.
Hayley checked her watch, "Weren't you supposed to sit in with mom and the interviewees today?"
He groaned, "What do you want Hayley?"
The more he spoke, the more familiar his voice became to me. "I want Jennifer Samuda fired."
My eyes landed on her to see her reaction and distraught was visibly written all over her face.
"Who's Jennifer Samuda?" he questioned.
Hayley facepalmed and sighed, "The receptionist."
We heard another loud yawn from his end, "Oh, right, do whatever you want, I don't really care. Just know it's up to you to find a new receptionist."
He ended the call after that.
I was pretty sure who it was after that...Dylan Faux. How is that asshole even qualified to run a place like this?
Jennifer looked mortified, sad, and angry all at the same time with a scowl playing at her lips. Hayley smirked, "Don't scowl like that sweetie, wouldn't want wrinkles on that pretty face now do we?"
Hayley turned to Amelia, "The job is yours if you want it."
Amelia looked at her in shock and disbelief, "Thank you so much, ma'am!"
Hayley genuinely smiled, "You deserve it." She met Jennifer's eyes as she continued speaking, "You have been doing all the receptionist's work around here anyway."
Jennifer suddenly smirked, "Excuse me Miss Faux but according to legislations set by your father, Damion Faux, no worker is allowed to be fired without a valid reason and personal feelings are not a valid reason."
I stared at Hayley for a sign of weakness but she just smiled, "Very impressive, you know your stuff but unfortunately for you, I do have a valid reason."
"Failure to attend to your responsibilities is a reprimandable offense in this company. You are expected to treat all visitors with respect, assist them to the best of your abilities and maintain the company's image. You failed at your job, this company doesn't need persons who pull it down."
I was amazed at how well Hayley handled the situation, truly remarkable.
Things got a bit crazy after that, I guess she got desperate.
Jennifer fell to the ground and latched onto Hayley's right leg, "Please Miss Faux, don't fire me!"
Hayley tried pushing her off but she wouldn't budge, "Get off me!"
The security guards saw the commotion and rushed over. They successfully pulled Jennifer off Hayley and escorted her outside, not without a fight though.
She's definitely crazy.
I turned to Hayley, "Thanks."
Hayley shrugged, "I didn't really do that for you, a lot of our visitors have been complaining about her behavior for a long while. I was actually on my way to warn her about it when I saw you."
"Well, even though it was by chance, the fact of the matter is that you stood up for me so thanks anyway."
I began going in the direction of the interview room.
"Where are you going?" Hayley questioned.
I gave her a puzzled look, " To the interview room?"
She gasped, "Dressed like that?"
I looked down at my sweat-drenched top and soiled jeans and shoes, "Yea, it's not like I have any other options."
She suddenly clapped her hands, "Makeover time!"
"I don't think we have enough time for that, plus you've done so much for me already."
Hayley checked her watch, "We have twenty minutes and I never got the chance to apologize for sending you to prison so please don't argue with me on this."
I sighed, "Fine, I'm all yours."
She did a small cheer, "Let's Go!"
