Chapter eleven

Connor had followed her again after work only to find two cars parked outside her apartment. He stepped closer and checked in his pocket for his dagger. Confirming it was there, he walked up to the small portico where the cars had been parked.

"What are you doing here?" he asked the man who stood by the black Audi Q7.

The lady is being moved for work purposes." Maxwell replied in his thick Spanish brogue. His expression was stoic and he didn't even turn to look at the man who was questioning him.

Maxwell had worked with the Leroy family for a very long time after Aaron had saved his life. He had been on a vacation trip with his wife and son. Unfortunately, there had been an accident and coincidentally Aaron happened to pass by the scene with Evan. They had rushed the family to the hospital themselves as the ambulance was yet to arrive. His wife and child, however, had died and he was brutally injured. He was only twenty-five at the time. When he recovered from being hospitalized, he had been told that it was Aaron who had settled his bills and had said to contact him if he was in need of anything. When he got back to his previous workplace, he realized that he had been replaced as he took too long to recuperate. He tried searching for other jobs to no avail and as a fall back, he called Aaron who had offered him a job as his secretary since his main secretary had taken a six months post-natal leave. He had worked as the secretary until Regan had met Arielle who was in need of a job. He stepped down for her as she had more knowledge on business administration and could handle the job even more efficiently than him. But the Leroy family had refused to let him go as he had no plans to remarry. Aaron had made him his personal assistant and he had been with them until now, Ten years later, serving them diligently.

The young Irish man in-front of him didn't faze him a bit. When he had lost his wife and child, he had felt too much pain. He had earnestly sought something to put his energy and emotions to instead of wallowing in self-pity. He had discovered the art of fighting. He learnt as much as he could before he had decided to call Aaron and he had still trained since then.

The dirty blond Irish gave the thirty-five year old a once-over. "And what are you, the boss's pet?" distaste and displeasure coloured his words.

Maxwell did not deem it fit to reply to Connor. He stood there like a sculpture made of hard marble. Connor had seen Elena scurry into the house when he had only arrived so he decided to see her for a bit before dealing with Maxwell. He headed to the door when Maxwell stopped him by grabbing his arm. "I would rather suggest that you don't go in. Don't push me." He warned, emotion distant from his voice.

"Are you trying to tell me that I can't go in to see in to see my woman-"

"I don't think Regan will be pleased to hear you call her that." His grip on Connor's arm tightened preventing him from going into the house.

"Fuck you and the boss." He spat and landed a blow to Maxwell's face.

Elena packed her clothes into a box without bothering to close it. She rushed back to the door and waited a beat to calm her frantic nerves. But her heart dropped into her stomach when she heard Regan say, "Fuck you and the boss." And she heard him land a punch on Maxwell. More punches and blows and cracking sounds followed and Elena did not know whether to stay inside or run through the window as her house didn't have a back door. What was Connor doing her? She heard a final blow and a deep growl. She braced herself for whatever she would see and wearily pushed the door open. She saw Connor sprawled on the floor with a bleeding mouth. The moment her saw her, he desperately tried to get up and get a hold of her only to be kicked in his mid-section by Maxwell.

She cringed when she heard the sound of cracking bones. Connor spat out blood from his mouth and grunted in pain. "I will make sure that I fucking kill you and that stupid boss of yours." He cursed.

Max guided her stiff, fear ridden body to the Audi that was waiting for them. "Sorry you had to see that." He got into the driver's seat. "Were you scared that he would hurt you?"

"Yes," she nodded meekly. "Thank you."

"Ay querida. I was only doing my job don't mention it." He said with an easy smile. He knew that she had no idea that he was the one that had rescued her the other night. He looked at her through the rear view mirror. She looked troubled but he trusted that Regan and he would find themselves. Together.
