Chapter 20: Evelyn, Part 8
I wasn't sure what had just happened, but I felt cold as ice, and like my insides had been scooped out in a hurry. Walking back slowly into the house, energy drained, I barely noticed when William almost ran me over. "Ah, sorry!" he said, steadying himself as he grabbed my shoulder. "I didn't see you there. Still gonna make sandwiches?"
"I'm not hungry, but sure."
He gently turned me around to face him, and he visibly struggled to keep himself from jumping back. "What's wrong with you?"
"What?" I moved past him trying to get to my car keys from the kitchen counter.
"You look like you've seen a—you look pasty and sweaty."
"So what, I was exercising," I lied, shrugging my shoulders.
"But your face looks sunken in, Evey."
After waving him off from following me, I picked up my keys and headed towards the front door. "I'll be fine."
