Peace and Suffering

"No, no! Amélie...how can this be...how can she be…"

Zacharie tried to speak, but found himself unable to express the questions that were running through his head so quickly that they were barely even registering anymore.

'Zacharie had always carried the guilt of not being a good father, of never having been able to provide the love that their child deserved. He knew what he had done was wrong and he deserved to be punished for that, but...he had never found himself capable of finding the same courage to speak all these words out loud in front of anyone.

He had accepted his guilt, but only in front of Amélie, his counterpart, knowing that he couldn't hide anything from her. Apart from her, no one had ever mentioned this in front of him, nor did he reflect on that.

But the guilt was undoubtedly present, it hadn't left his mind even for a second just because the people around him never added to it by bringing it up.
