"You know… they say there's a prince in the city." Dextera said, laying out a white sheet on the floor. They were in a room, if you dared to call it that. It could barely even fit a couch and was one amongst the many in the building. A building filled with small rooms you couldn't even call rooms where those inside had to bring their own blankets, sleeping bags, and toiletries for the public bathroom and shower. "I heard he was staying in this exact same building."
Rykar sighed, handing her sister the pillows she'd been tasked with holding. "What are you trying to do?"
"Nothing. Royals are a pain." Dextera's eyes were wide with curiosity as she spoke, her arrangement of the pillows on the floor was precise. "It's about the person that's with him."
"A royal?" Her sister shook her head. "A celebrity?" Once again no. "Is it somebody whom I've never heard off?" Yes. Rykar took a moment to think before shrugging. "Who is it?"
"An otherworlder." Dextera exclaimed, shaking her hands by her head.
Rykar sat down, embracing her backpack as she did. "You're joking."
"I'm not."
"How do you know?"
"The prince is Prince David."
Rykar stood up immediately, stretching her hand. "Come on. Let's go find them."
Dextera agreed, crossing her arms and leaning against the wall behind her, crushing her pillow. "That would be a good idea, but do remember. Prince David is still royalty and they're annoying to deal with."
"Come on." Rykar kept her arm stretched out, her fingertips tapping against one another in an attempt to get her sister to stand. "It's an otherworlder. When have you ever seen one?"
"Go alone."
"No way. I don't want to talk to the prince."
"Neither do I. You either go and talk to them both or don't go."
Rykar turned to the door, preparing to leave but then stopping upon remembering the reason behind the prince being banned from ever giving any press conferences. Most countries had already made it illegal for him to be given a public platform and as such Rykar turned back to her sister. "Would it make a difference if I offered to do your laundry?" It was the only thing that came to mind.
"Well yes, but also well no it doesn't make a change but yea sirahay." Dextera muttered, shaking her head and eventually standing up. "Ok. Come on. Let's go and find the otherworlder."
Rykar reached for Snofflepafalefasus but was stopped by Dextera. "Hey, don't torture my child." Dextera clicked her tongue and reached for the sugar glider, patting its head gently. "Snofflepafalefasus can stay. Won't you bebé?" Her voice had become high pitched. A bright smile across her lips. "Of course you will. Of course you will."
"Let's move. We must go."
They walked up and down the building. Started going upwards from the third floor, where their room that couldn't actually be considered a room was, to the fifth floor. The view from the top floor was just as bad as the view from the first- practically non existent.
It was on the staircase to the second floor, which actually was the sixth floor due to scheduling issues, that they found a strange amount of people waiting in line. "We're passing by." The woman in front of them explained. "If you're quick enough the prince might not notice you."
"My sister wants to talk to the Otherworlder." Dextera said, using a hand to motion at Rykar who simply balanced herself on her tiptoes.
"So did a man." The woman said, shaking her head and sighing. "Poor man. He's agreed to host the Prince and his friends when he visits the man's hometown."
Dextera sighed, placing her hand on her chest as a form of pity. "That's a shame." She turned to Rykar and raised an eyebrow. "Did you hear that? A man now has to host the prince."
"And another has been invited to his wedding." The woman chimed in, looking over Dextera's shoulder. "Forced them to add his phone number and give them their ID too."
Dextera's eyebrow rose slightly higher, her expression one of feigned surprise. "Give them their ID too?"
The woman stood on her tiptoes, looking at Rykar from over Dextera's shoulder as she did. Her eyes were sneaky, her posture similar to that of a mouse."He proposed to a beautiful girl and now she's set to go on a date with him."
"Well you don't have to worry too much about that." Dextera said, lifting her hands slightly and giving Rykar a smirk. "Imagine me dating the prince."
"Oh you wouldn't want that." The old woman said, and several voices belonging from those in line echoed the same sentiment.
Rykar felt as though, if she were to roll her eyes to the back of their head there they would remain. "Guess we won't be royalty then." Dextera said, pretending to be relieved. She turned back to the woman. "A glance then. How does the Otherworlder look?"
The woman smiled gently and leaned in, as though she knew a great secret. "They say he's very good looking."
Dextera's dark eyes became full of mischief. Her smile sly as she turned to her eldest sister. "Handsome you say?"
"Oh yes. Do you know that actor on tv? The one in the reboot of Passion of the Pirate Princess." The woman said, her eyes narrowing slightly. "That was a terrible reboot but the main actor was very handsome. So handsome they've made it illegal to brand his face on things." It was the greatest compliment of them all, forcing people to travel far and wide in order to catch a glimpse of the beauty.
"Oh my." Dextera exaggerated. "Rykar, did you hear? Your future boyfriend is extremely handsome."
"Continue and I'll tell mom about the vase." Rykar threatened, essentially setting on fire one of the many blackmailing possibilities siblings tend to have against each other.
Dextera kept quiet.
The line moved quickly enough to avoid having to spend time with the prince but at a pace that allowed them to catch a glimpse of the Otherworlder without seeming offensive. The closer Rykar found herself to the door the more she began to wonder if it was a waste of time. She wanted to sleep and think of where to go, plan it all out. Her mind soon began to stray away from the Otherworlder and onto a map burned into her brain. There were plenty of places she could go to. Plenty of food she could try. Languages to learn.
It then occurred to her that she would need a translator and began to think of her options. There were those that were similar to headphones, there was the small fish that you placed into your ear. Her phone had an app. Dictionaries. And there was always the possibility of having it written on you.
They both walked together when their turn came. Passing by the prince casually. It was then that Rykar caught a glimpse of someone who seemed to not at all be there. His eyes were lost, his expression dejected. "He does look like the actor." Dextera whispered, interrupting her thoughts. "Only with pink hair. Do you think that's natural or dyed?" It looked dyed.
Rykar stopped and turned to her sister, her eyes filled with a look that made Dextera want to cry. "Fine." Dextera said, her voice a whisper. "But you'll pay for my lawyer if I end up murdering the prince. A good one."
As they moved towards the prince the people in line began to whisper. Their bodies crowding near the entrance to the floor, climbing over each other in what seemed to be an interesting attempt at reaching for gossip.
"Prince David of Piria." Dextera said, facing the young prince whose appearance was all too immaculate. "Now, what's the heir to the throne doing all the way here?"
