Mel has opened her eyes wide now for an hour.
'We had an accident!?' She was terrified after remembering what had happened on that fateful night.
"M-mom, Mom," she tried to call her mother, but her voice did not come out. Her throat felt so dry, and it hurt like hell when she had to swallow her saliva. "Mom, where is my mother? Please! Is there anyone out there? P-p-please help!" She started to panic.
She looked around. She saw an electronic device with a red button on it to call the nurse. It's beside the bed. She tried to move her hand to reach the small button but to no avail. She couldn't move her body. Now she is terrified.
"Mom, where are you! Mom. Hello. Anyone?" She tried to scream again. Now she could felt her mouth was open, but it wasn't making any sound. She felt pain in her throat, and it was getting worse.
Her efforts were in vain; she felt exhausted. Silently she stared at the ceiling. Without her knowing, her sight became blurry, tears rolled down her cheeks, she cried. She falls into deep despair.
After a while, Mel speaks to herself, voiceless. "I WILL NOT GIVE UP!" again, and again and again. With the energy she has left, she's trying to lift her arms. Small tears continue to fall from her eyes. I need to call a nurse. Please help me this time!" She tried and tried again to move her arms and hands again, but still, nothing happened.
Then she heard something is approaching.
She heard footsteps approaching the room; the sound of footsteps drew closer as if someone was running towards her room. She was happy; finally, there was someone she could ask. But she's also terrified as she doesn't know who is approaching her.
The bedroom door opened. A nurse comes in, walks fast to her. Mel is glad to see she's in a hospital. Suddenly she feels her hope slightly lifted.
"Miss Melanie? Oh my God, are you awake?" Her eyes widened; she couldn't believe what she saw. She has been looking after this patient for two years. Every day, she came to talk to her and clean her body; the patient never moved or responded to her. But this patient wakes up! Her heartfelt warmth. She was happy to see her awake.
"Miss Melanie, I thought I heard the wrong call signal from your room, but it turned out true. Did you press the button?" She skillfully checked the machine instrument besides the bed and the IV tubes.
After that, she smiled in relief and said, "Good Lord in Heaven, thank you for waking Ms. Melanie Tanner." She then holds Mel's hand and whispered in her ears, "congratulation, Miss. Tanner, you finally woke up from your coma."
Mel was stunned when she found out she was in a coma. She tried to ask the nurse, but the nurse talk before she could say anything. "Ms. Tanner, I need you to take a deep breath and try to stay calm. I can see your heart beat faster. Please wait a moment; I will get you your doctor here." She said that while walking out of the room.
Mel is taking the deepest breath she could inhale and then trying to calm herself down. Although she's feeling better, she's still in so much confusion.
I just woke up from a coma?
Did I press the emergency button on the remote? No, no, I didn't.
Who's pressed it? What happens to me?
Earlier, she didn't feel like pressing the button. She couldn't even reach it. How come the nurse said she received a call from this room? Instantly she feels goosebumps. Is there a ghost in this room? She looked around. She was the only one in the room.
Suddenly she feels disoriented. Then she heard someone approaching her room again. It's elevated her feeling out of disorientation.
"Hello Ms. Melanie Tanner, I'm Dr. Robert, your chief physician. Can you hear me?" Doctor Robert looks older than his age, but you could feel calmness and wisdom in his voice. He greeted Mel in a friendly and fatherly way. He checked the instrument besides the table and read the chart given by the nurse.
Mel tried to nod her head, but she couldn't move. She blinks two times.
The doctor realized Mel could not move her body; he came closer to her and whispered, "Ms. Tanner, can you speak?" he asked.
Mel didn't blink. She just stares at him.
The doctor took a small flashlight from his pocket. Then aim the flashlight at Mel's eye level. "Ms. Tanner, if you can hear me, please follow this light with your eyes."
Mel obeyed the doctor's orders.
The doctor nodded in satisfaction. "Nurse, give her some water."
The nurse gave Mel water with a spoon. As the water trickled down Mel's throat, she felt a relaxed, comfortable sensation. Little by little, she took a sip of the water that the nurse had given her. Every sip taken has given her more strength.
A few moments later, she finally managed to get her voice out, though it still sounded feeble and hoarse. "M-m-mom, where is my mother?"
She remembers clearly now. When the accident happened, she was with her mother. But when she woke up, she didn't see her. She feels something terrifying happened. Now she's afraid that something terrible has happened to her mother.
When they hear Mel's question, Dr. Robert and the nurse are looking at each other. Then they looked at Mel altogether with sympathetic eyes. Mel, who saw the changes, was getting even more uneasy.
"D-doctor Robert, where is my mother?" She whispered with her watery eyes were still staring at him.
Dr. Robert feels sorry for what had happened to Mel. He then goes on checking Mel's indicators in silence. He wants to tell the truth, but he needs to make sure she's strong enough to hear the news.
After seemingly like forever, Dr. Robert softly holds Mel's hand. With a gentle fatherly voice and tone he sets as if Mel is his daughter, he conveys the tragic news. "Ms. Tanner. I'm sorry to tell you this, but your mother didn't survive the accident. Her injuries were so severe by the time she arrived in the ICU, she had passed away. I'm so sorry for your loss."
In an instant, Mel feels like her world upside down; everything is blurry, her tears flowed uncontrollably. Her heart ached severely; it felt like it was breaking into pieces. Now that she knows her mother's death, she's sad, and not for long; she's starting to upset.
"No, you must be lying, right? Tell me it's not true. Tell me my mother is alright." Mel refuses to believe Doctor Robert and begs him to say yes. Doctor Robert did not answer her question. Mel feels such anger that makes her wants to smash all the equipment attached that monitors her body. Suddenly, all the equipment is starting to making noise and blinking all its light.
Mel could see Dr. Robert and the nurse jump in panic when the machines monitoring her body are beeping loudly and blinking uncontrollably. Then everything went dark again; she lost her consciousness.
Mel's eyelids tremble; she felt her cheeks wet. She wiped the tears from her cheeks. Every time she recalled the memories, she couldn't do anything but cries.
The first year after she woke up from her coma, Mel always woke up in the middle of the night. She has a nightmare of her terrible accident. And when she is dreaming, she dreams of hugging her mom, and it will end up with her waking up after sobbing in her sleep. Her heart feels torn apart; it hurts so much.
All the agony and pain she had to endure at that time, the only thing that kept her spirit alive is when she realized that something strange has happened to her. Something unique and powerful. She somehow could communicate with machines, any electronic machines. She can rule over any objects that are connected with electricity or have radio signals.
Sometimes she forgets her pain and suffering, preoccupied with trying her new abilities.
Her mind deviates from any suffering or hardship she has by thinking about her newly found abilities. She began to explore the limits of her powers. Just then, she realized something extraordinary.
She can make any games she wants to play plays. She also can create applications that have never existed by imagining its codes. As she could see computer code in the skies or on the wall, she then writes it on computers, without even touching the computer. But as she grows to like the sound of typing on computer keyboards, she quickly learns to write the codes by typing it super-fast on the keyboard. And not long after, she has entered the world of hackers.
Her new abilities have made her happy. She feels super. But at the very same time, she also afraid of how far she could misuse it, doing something irresponsible with it. She felt like an alien who came from another galaxy. She was also scared if someone found out about her ability, they would capture her and make her an object of research, even dissected her brain.
She must keep her abilities a secret from anyone. She won't tell anyone.
