Just when Tyberson was about to die, Zan appeared with a horse. Though he could hear their heads ringing from the bright light from earlier.
Tyberson forced himself to escape the web of cocoons surrounding him. He slowly stood and caught Zan's arm. He was then lifted to ride on the horse. He panted.
Zan worriedly looked at his state. "Captain, what happened? Why are you bloodied?"
"That bastard Reg and my men. They betrayed me."
The horse took a u-turn to evade the spiders which were frozen right now. The lights from the flash grenade caused them blindness. The veil spiders had a sensitive vision after all.
When the veil spiders regained their sight, they headed towards the horse. There was a swarm of them.
The VMF appeared. They switched to full automatic and lit up the scene.
Bang, bang, bang! Their bullets showered towards the spiders, tattering their bodies like mincemeat.
As Tyberson witnessed it, he was surprised. His eyes widened. "Zan what kind of weapon are they using?"
Zan scratched his head. "Actually, I was surprised as well. But I can tell you there is no magic stone affixed to it. So it's not magical."
Tyberson observed how they used their weapons. It was like crossbows but a thousand times better. Shooting out projectiles for a long period.
7 of the VMF held out the incoming spiders while Zan and Tyberson were escaping. But since the spiders were piling up like crazy. They backtracked as well.
"Retreat!" Flynn spoke.
They jogged and accompanied their horse. As they made their way through the forest, there were spiders sparsely allocated. They then shot it down so they could clear a path.
"Reload!" While they were reloading, some were giving them cover.
"This is crazy, I thought the spiders have already left our area," Varg said.
They ran as they continued firing. "Well, they came back for some reason."
Seeing there was a swarm up ahead, Flynn took a flash grenade, unpinned it, and hurled it to the swarm. With a bright light, it stunned them. They then showered it with their weapons.
Mark picked up a call from his radio.
"Private, we found the rescue team. Ascend to the highland for our escape." Their lookout spoke.
"Roger," Mark responded. He then gestured to his associates in which direction to move. They then jogged away leaving the forest.
Looking above, on a rock formation. Their lookout was waving. All they had to do was to climb up to ensure their escape. The rescue team had already called them before.
Varg chuckled. "We're finally leaving this hellhole."
"You're right, this place is grossing me out."
To their surprise, their path was blocked. Reg and the knights were on their way, forcing them to stop. Reg then smirked at them. "Tyber, you persistent old dog, you manage to escape out of it alive, huh?"
Tyberson was panting. "Reg, you better stay out of our way or you'll regret it. You don't know who you are dealing with and I'm not threatening you. These people have terrifying weapons."
Reg and his knights laughed. They then aimed their pointy spear at them. "Those rods, huh? Tell me what can they do? They're certainly not magical staff, they don't like bladed weapons either. I guess you and your friends should just die right here and now."
The VMF was staring at each other. They raised their rifles back at the knights.
"Sir Flynn, I don't like the looks of that man," Mark said as he stared at Reg.
Flynn nodded. "Yeah, I saw eyes like that once. It's an eye of a mindless resolve. The only way to cure it is with a bullet in the head."
Varg chuckled. "I guess this is a good time to know if modern guns can penetrate medieval armor."
Reg then unsheathed his blade. He pointed at the VMF. "Alright guys! Get them!"
Flynn gestured for them to fire. With repeated fire shots followed with a shattering noise. One by one, the knights fell from their horses.
Their bullets pierced straight through their iron armor. Some of the horses were shocked by the noise that it galloped away into the forest.
The remaining knights were terrified including Reg. They shivered. "Eh? What the hell happened?"
Looking at the knights on the ground, they were bleeding. Everything happened so fast that they were confused.
Flynn spoke. "You guys still won't move from our way?"
Tyberson translated it to him in the Silian language.
Reg gritted his teeth. He wanted to move but he could barely do it from fear. The Knights then dropped their spears to the ground, while holding their heads.
"We surrender!"
Reg clicked his tongue and dropped his sword as well. They moved away to clear a path.
The VMF, Zan, and Tyberson moved through in a hurry. They were now heading to the top of a tall rock formation. There was a pathway that could lead them to the top. It was the size of an apartment up close.
As they jogged on the path leading to the top, they could see clearly now below. They noticed a mass swarm of working spiders approaching them. It was distant and they looked like black waters flooding the forest.
Varg was surprised. "Huh?! That's more than the army accompanying the giant spider."
Zan explained. "These spiders came from the nest of the queen. Due to the hormones the queen's corpse released from earlier, all the spiders in the swamps are called to gather in one place."
Flynn and the VMF were worried. "Then we need to hurry."
Reaching the top they observed the spiders' activities.
The terrifying veil spiders which probably reached a million took over and consumed the queen's corpse only in a minute. Their numbers were overflowing that some could be found crawling above the foliages.
Afterward, the spiders were now heading to them. If none was done, it would be their doom.
Reg and the knights were running away from fear. They were trying to escape.
Tyberson panicked. "The veil spiders could get here soon. What is our plan? There's no way we can beat them."
There was an incoming call. "Captain Flynn, incoming airstrike. Maintain distance from the specified area, over."
Flynn and the VMF smiled. "Roger."
Varg took a deep breath. "What the hell did it take them so long."
The VMF then loosened up.
Tyberson was curious why they were now relaxed. He could see nothing around him that could resolve the conflict. Until a sharp noise from the sky reached his ear.
He gazed up and saw iron birds zipping through the wind. They were quite fast. They were A-3 Sky Warrior aircraft.
"Huh?! What are those!"
Multiple napalm bombs were dropped from their vessels, delivering explosions that devoured the giant insects.
Constant eruptions of bombs occurred on the swamp, swallowing the targets into annihilation. They performed several u-turns to fully annihilate the enemy forces.
After a sparse of them was left, an AH-64 attack helicopter appeared on the scenes. They located the enemies first and fired their missiles. They were now sweeping the remaining spiders.
The Vesnian Air Force has now arrived.
Flynn and the VMF were observing with binoculars. They were distant from the airstrike zone. Flynn was amused. "So these are the new 2nd hand aircraft bought from the US, huh? Not bad."
"The president totally went overboard with the debt."
Mark smiled. "President Clyde is a God, glad I voted him for him. If he didn't loan from the world bank, we could have been defenseless in this world."
"President Clyde may sound like a clown on TV but when it counts he's actually a great and smart man," Flynn said.
"The media does quite a good job at making him look like one."
"Let's stop talking about politics while working guys." Varg sat down.
As the VMF was talking, Tyberson was shocked. His jaw fell upon seeing the helicopters and jets roving the sky. They looked like the conquerors of the heavens.
He could now see how they managed to defeat the death crawler. He was even trembling from the explosions inflicted on the swamp.
He understood these weren't ordinary soldiers that anyone should mess with. An experienced army no matter how skilled would get stomped like ants. Was there even a point going battle against them?
Tyberson was horrified, but he noticed Zan wasn't a bit afraid. Rather, he was amused.
"Zan, why are so you calm?"
"I'm not. I'm overwhelmed. I wanna see what those things are?" He reached out his arm on the sky trying to reach them. "They piqued my curiosity."
Above, a chopper moved close and dropped a rope ladder. They then slowly climbed up.
Private Mark went on last and offered it to Tyberson and Zan first. Zan gulped as he gazed up. "I can ride that thing?"
Mark nodded. "We will deliver you to the princess."
Tyberson gazed at him for seconds then he nodded.
After Zan made it into the copter, Tyberson then hurried as well but he had to slow down due to his injury. A medical nurse then went to him and tend his wounds.
Zan was laughing as he gazed over the window. "I can't believe it. I'm flying!"
Tyberson lied down. He had a thousand questions in his mind and he didn't even know where to start.
"We are going to your country, right?"
Mark smiled. "Yeah. You will see her soon." They then drove away afterward.
All that was left on the swamp were spider corpses. There were a few left but they were no longer a threat.
Reg and the knights almost pissed their pants after seeing the iron birds inflicting explosions on the land. They shivered as they went back on their horses and galloped away. "We need to return to the capital!"
But to their surprise, a sharp and long stick flew in the air and struck their bodies, penetrating even through their iron armors. They fell from their horses and bled out to death.
Two men with a hood and robe were hiding on the dark corners of the swamp and behind them were an army of goblins.
One man smirked. "So the veil spiders are annihilated now huh?"
Another man cackled. "Then nothing can stop us from our plan."
