Forest trail

"This is delicious!"

I could hardly talk with my mouth full of the grilled meat Itsuki made. He grinned at me.

"I'm glad you like it"

This is our 5th day camping out in the forests, and if there was one thing that I noticed, it's that having Itsuki with me made my life so much better. This man made food, shelter, and even weapons out of just raw materials found in the woods. He could literally adapt anywhere.

He infiltrated an entire village and calculated a safe route that could lead us out undetected in a matter of minutes. He must have been a spy, working under Rinnes, the reason why the lord managed to evade capture for all these years.

"We have to leave the forest, Itsuki," I say, dusting my hands off the crumbs. "Before they catch up"

"You don't have to worry about Rinnes anymore," he says, "He won't search for me until he sets for a new base, and that's not going to be possible anytime soon.."

I let out an awkward laugh, "I'm sorry, but I'm not talking about your pursuers, I'm talking about mine"

He stares at me. "What?! What do you mean?"

I cleared my throat, "You are looking at a prisoner of the Akatsuki, who messed with the Anbu from the leaf, along with other S rank criminals like Uchiha Sasuke..oh I'm also being targeted by two great nations"

He groans and puts his head in his hands. "Please tell me you're joking"

"I wish I was" I shrug.

"Just what have you been up to? actually, don't answer that" he says and makes his way over to me. "what's the plan?"

"That's a good question"

I have been trying to think of one all this while but there are too many things that still remain uncertain. Now is around the time Jiraiya probably leaves for the Rain village, and dies while fighting pain. Should I return to the Leaf and stop his death? Or should I find Sasuke and stop him from killing Itachi? And more than anything, did my interference cause any deviation in the original storyline?

"Let's first find an inn to stay in for the night, how long till we reach the next village?"

Itsuki sighs and gazes at the sky, "around 3 hours maybe'' He looks so tired, I can't help but feel sorry for him. But we have to keep our guard up, there are too many people on our tail.

I scoot closer to him and put my hand around his shoulder. He looks at me and his ears turn red.

"Do you know what I thought the whole time Rinnes hit me?"

His eyes darken at the mention of the memory, "what a useless piece of trash I am?"

"How lucky I was to find a guy who cries when I'm in pain, in a world I don't even belong in" I gaze up at the stars."I glad I met you, Itsuki"

His eyes soften and for the first time, he smiles. "I'm glad I met you too, Leah, I -"

We both felt it. Our eyes snapped in the direction of the thick woods. People, no, the ordered and synchronized movement, they have to be trained shinobi.

My worst nightmare came true.

"Run," I said, and grabbed Itsuki as we raced our way through the night.
