[48] Against His Instinct

Two roses -a red and a white- were drawn into existence, and placed at the feet of the girl who'd been killed by the little boy. I couldn't see her face properly. All I saw was Leith, examining her before nodding to Celena -who then drew a white coffin. Leith scribbled something and the girl disappeared from the ground -into the coffin, I'd imagined. Celena erased the coffin and the road was completely clear once more. The storm was beginning to die down, and I knew it was safe for us to head back to Celena's apartment without any more interruptions.

As they strolled back to the car with the most serious of faces, Leith looked at me and forced himself to frown further for a second.

"It's part of the job," he told me, buckling the seat belt and starting the engine.

"Yea," I said, flatly. I turned to him with the straightest of faces, "Yea. I know."

I looked back at Celena, who smiled halfheartedly at me before looking down at Ethan.
