[90] Retrospect

Leith set his journal on the tiles beside him and stretched out his legs to look up at the figure before him. Even though the place was dark Faye was glowing. She couldn’t help brightening the area a little. “Couldn’t sleep?” he asked her.

Faye turned to see him there, with only the slightest glimmer of light reflecting in his eyes. “Couldn’t you?” she asked him.

He let out a breathy laugh. “I’m used to not being able to sleep properly.”

“Looks like I don’t have a choice but to get used to it,” Faye replied, disappointed.

Leith adjusted his position, so he could lean forward. He patted the platform next to him so she could sit. “Let’s talk.”

So Faye sat. She looked at him, and he looked sad.

“I’m... sorry,” she said, lowering her head and fidgeting with her fingers, “About your dad.”

Leith shrugged, “Please,” he said, “Not you, too. I’ve been hearing these sympathetic comments all day.” He pushed himself off his seat to stand. “I need a break.”
