Chapter 11- Did he fall in love with her?

Her breathing hitched up, and she looked at him with wide eyes. Fear was evident in her eyes. She also forgot to breathe. Although she said those words willfully, still, she was always afraid to be touched by another man except Aidan.

Charles’s face was dangerously close to hers, his lips almost brushing her lips. She pursed her lips into a thin line, looking at him, utterly confused. His gaze moved to her eyes, and he saw the horror in them. He sneered, “Why are you scared now? Didn’t you want to sleep with me? Let me taste your lips.”

He intentionally said those words to scare her more. She swallowed her saliva and kept looking at him with the same fear in her teary eyes. She didn’t even dare to take long breaths. Charles’s eyes softened and sighed. His heart twinge to see tears in her eyes. He wiped the tears away from her cheeks with his forefinger and said, “Alright. Now, be good and don’t talk nonsense, okay?”

He went to his seat and started the engine. Only then did Abigail heave a sigh of relief. She didn’t talk after that and turned her head to look outside through the windshield.

By the time the car halted in front of the Mills mansion, she was far asleep. He turned to look at her and called her, tapping on her shoulder, “Miss Mills, wake up.” But she only murmured something in her dreams and snuggled on the seat. Charles sighed and shook his head before stepping out of the car. He opened the passenger seat door and unbuckled her seatbelt. Then he carried her horizontally and strode inside the mansion.

The butler’s eyes went wide to see Abigail in the arms of an unknown man. He came running to Charles and asked, “What happened to madam? Why is she…” He didn’t complete his sentence when the smell of the alcohol hit his nostrils. He brought his hand to block his nose instinctively and looked at Charles suspiciously. Charles asked, “Could you tell me where her room is?”

“Follow me.” The butler turned around and walked ahead while Charles followed him quietly. Her room was on the second floor, and after lying her down on the bed, he came out of there in haste. But he encountered Robert Mills in the living room. He smiled and greeted him politely, “Hello, Mr. Mills.”

But he earned a scowl from him. It seemed that Robert Mills was not happy to see Charles with Abigail. He looked at him up and down and thought he had seen him somewhere, but he couldn’t remember where he had seen him. He wondered how Abigail ended up with this man. Didn’t she go to meet her friend Rebecca? He couldn’t help but ask, “Who are you? How did she get drunk?”

Charles’s smile grew wide and replied, “My name is Charles Shaw. I am Mr. Thompson’s assistant. Miss Mills called me to pick her up from the bar as she was drunk and couldn’t drive in this condition.”

Here Charles didn’t tell the truth and also didn’t mention anything about Aidan cheating on Abigail. He was not sure of her statement, and before knowing the truth, he couldn’t say firmly about it.

“Oh…” Robert Mills nodded as he remembered something and said coldly, “So you are the one Aidan assigned to accompany Abi.”

“Yes.” The smile on Charles’s face was still there. But Robert’s expression turned ugly, and his tone became even colder, “If you accompany her, you should take care of her. A few days ago, she had suffered from a stomach ache, and tonight, she got drunk. If you can’t look after her, just tell Aidan to assign someone else. I don’t want to see you with my daughter in the future.”

Charles’s smile froze in the corner of his lips. He felt a sharp pain in his heart. But why? He wondered. He should feel happy. Didn’t he hate her? He always wanted his boss to replace him with someone else to accompany Abigail. If Robert Mills didn’t want him to see be his daughter’s side, Aidan couldn’t deny him and his wish would be fulfilled. Then why was he not happy? Why did he feel like a chunk of his heart was ripped out by someone? Unable to say anything, he kept staring at him blankly. Then he heard him say again, “I will tell Aidan about it. You… Stay away from my daughter.”

Charles looked down at the tip of his shoes and said, “I understand.” He suppressed the uncomfortable pain in his heart and lifted his head to look at him. He smiled and said, “Good night, Mr. Mills.” With that, he turned around and left.

The smile on his face faded straight away, and a gleam of sadness spread through his eyes the moment he stepped out of the mansion. He felt like his heart was torn apart. It was very painful. This was a new feeling to him. When he got in the car, he leaned over the seat and thought for a while, his eyes closed. His grip on the steering wheel was tight. It was good that he didn’t have to see her face again, and he didn’t have to bear her tantrums. Didn’t he feel annoyed with her an hour ago? Didn’t he curse her in his mind several times? He should be delighted. Why was he feeling sad? Could it be that he fell in love with her? His eyes shot open the moment this thought surfaced in his mind.

“No… no… no… It’s impossible.” He murmured.

How could he fall in love with her? She was his boss’s fiancee. He couldn’t think otherwise about her. He shook his head to shrug off that thought from his mind and started the engine. He drove the car quickly away from there and swore in his mind to never come in front of Abigail again.

The next morning, when Abigail woke up, the first thing she felt was a severe headache.

“Ah… my head…” She groaned, holding her head with her hands. Her eyes were still shut tight.

“You are awake.” A deep male voice came from her right side. She opened her eyes frantically and turned her head to look at the person. Her expression instantly changed, and she asked, glaring at him angrily, “Why are you here? Who let you in my room. Get out of here.”

But her headache increased even more. She felt like someone slapped her in the back of her head. She cursed, pressing her forehead, “Fuck… my head.”

Aidan grabbed the glass of lemon water from the center table and walked up to the bed. He sat beside her and said, “Drink it. You will feel better.”

Abigail just turned her head, showing her unwillingness to speak to him, but Aidan stuffed the glass in her hand and said in his commanding tone, “Don’t make a fuss. Drink it.”

His tone brought tears in her eyes, and she looked at him painfully. He exclaimed, unable to hold his anger, “Drink, Abigail. Now…”

She flinched and didn’t delay drinking the lemon water, looking at him frightfully. When she finished drinking, he took the glass from her hand and put it down on the side table. He took his handkerchief out of his pocket and wiped the traces of the lemon water from her mouth gently.

Abigail was stupefied. Just now, he yelled at her, and in the next second, he was all acting gently to her. Aidan was becoming more and more complicated, and she couldn’t understand him at all. He seemed like a puzzle to her.

Just as she was wondering, she heard him say, “I am sorry, darling. I shouldn’t shout at you. I got mad when you said that we are done.” The coldness in his eyes was gone, and it was replaced by sorrow. “How could you say like that? Don’t you know how much I love you? Don’t you have a little bit of faith in me? I am not cheating on you. Her name is Erica Barrett. She is the brand ambassador of my company. Our relationship is only professional, nothing else.” He cupped her face and continued speaking, “Trust me, darling. We went there for a friendly dinner. But before I could explain anything, you just slapped her. She is a famous model and the face of my company. I lost my temper to see you behave wildly.” He paused for a while to look down, only to look up at her again, and asked, “Can you forgive me? I can’t stay without you. Please…”

She placed her hands on his hands that held her face and asked, “Are you telling the truth? You are not dating that woman, right?”

“I am not dating her, my love. Trust me.” Aidan cast a pleading look at her.

Abigail peered at him, searching for the truth in his eyes. And when she saw the seriousness in his gaze, only then did a smile surfaced on her face, and she said, “I trust you.”

“Oh, darling… Thank you.” As he said, he lowered his head and kissed her lips.

The moment his lips touched hers, heat arose inside him. He had not kissed her for two years. He almost forgot how she tasted like. Her lips tasted so sweet, and he liked it. He gradually deepened the kiss, and the kiss became urgent and fierce. He was about to lose his control when Abigail pulled back forcefully. He didn’t like it and looked at her with displeasure. She lowered her head and said slowly, “Aidan... not now… please.”
