Alisa
“Want me to walk you out?” I ask Stella as we clock out for the night.
Although she’s older than me and she’s obviously able to take care of herself, I like to make sure she’s safe. Especially since she’s pregnant. If I were in her shoes, I’d want someone to look out for me. Ransom’s tried to request she be on an earlier shift, but she refuses to ask for special treatment.
“You don’t have to.” She takes a drink of her water.
“I don’t have to, but I want to. You’d do the same for me.”
“You’re right, I would. I appreciate it.” She smiles, tired lines at her eyes. “I’ll take you up on it. It’ll make you feel better and when I tell Ransom about it later, he’ll be impressed I let someone help me.”
Together, we make our way out into the warm early morning. Even at almost three am, it’s still warm and muggy.
Welcome to south Alabama.
“How do you like it here?” Stella asks as we walk into the security lights.
“I love it!”
