Chapter 6: POLKA ORUKA?
I woke up to find myself embraced by Calli, Miko, and Pekora look at us while snickering. We finally got out of the forest and Yamato is in sight. I can finally get a map, I thought. Until we see the guards seemingly scramble to open the gates frantically just from seeing us arriving. We stopped by to check the situation with the guards.
"I am one of the twelve guardians of Yamato..., we had cleared a path for your passage. please make haste to our God!!" [Twelve guardian-Mouse]
"Understood, we will reach there as soon as possible" [Calli]
The situation sounds grave, maybe something has happened to her, I thought.
"I think they might have amplified the graveness of the situation from my letter..."[Calli]
"It's ok Calli, I can just shower at the next stop." [Miko]
"Well, I don't see a problem getting an express pass peko." [Pekora]
"It's fine Calli, don't blame yourself." [Edge]
There goes my hopes of getting a map.
We passed Yamato in a day, and we reached the last village at midnight before reaching the north military base. We finally cleaned ourselves up and went to sleep. 1 day before we reach the north base, Miko seems to be fidgeting a black rectangular rock for the past few days. She suggested we set up camp here today. The day is getting darker and Miko gets more nervous. Out of nowhere, we heard music coming our way. 'OWARU~GA~ POLKA, POLKA~OWARUKA~OWARU~GA~POLKA~'
It was a Fennec, no, it was a clown dressed in red and blue riding on a bicycle with a vinyl recorder attached at the back that is cranked by 2 tiny creatures wearing hats. The fennec wore a hat covering her left ear, had a blue ribbon on top of her head that is the center of 2 pink strands of hair in the shape of fan blades. Her big googly purple eyes and bright smile greeted us with glee.
"MAOU-SAMA!! I'M HERE!! " [Polka]
"POLKA!! I THOUGHT YOU WOULDN"T COME!!" [Miko]
They seemed to know each other, so Miko must've contacted her to meet us here.
"Of course I would come for Maou-sama, I just got a little lost coming down the mountain haha. Oh hi reaper and erm pegora?" [Polka]
"Bakatare-ga! It's Pekora! "[Pekora]
"Sorry, Pekora!"[Polka]
Miko held my shoulders and walked me towards the clown.
"Here's the boy, His name is Edge" [Miko]
The clown greeted me with a bright smile and she squatted down to have a good look at me.
"What a good-looking boy, had you been to a circus? " [Polka]
"A what?" [Edge]
"Wait... The legendary circus?" [Pekora]
She jumped up in joy and asked us to step back.
"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! I NOW WELCOME YOU ALL TO BE A GUEST OF THIS GREAT CIRCUS!! {HOLOGRAM CIRCUS} !! "
Darkness covered the land, all of a sudden many rays of lights flew into the air and exploded, forming various bright patterns in the night sky. The land slowly lit up to reveal several tents and many different attractions.
"ITS SHOWTIME!" [POLKA]
Animals paraded by the troupe greeted us along with Polka who was sitting on an elephant's back.
"Get up here, we are going to have lots of fun. " [Polka]
"O..Okay!" [Edge]
The elephant grabbed hold of my waist and lifted me up behind his back. We circled the circus in the parade and after the parade, we were seated in the largest tent awaiting Polka's performance.
"PORUKA ORUKA!" [ELITE Miko][Pekora][Edge][Calli]
"PORUKA ORU~YO!" [Polka]
The curtain rises and we see polka holding juggling clubs in her hands. She tried to juggle them but ended up in failure for the first few tries. But later, she threw the juggling clubs into the air and successfully juggled them as she had intended.
"Wow! *Claps* " [Edge]
Seeing success, she took the juggling to another level by standing on a ball while juggling.
"Cheh, I could do that myself too peko"[Pekora]
Pekora seemed disinterested by Polka's show and already lost interest in what would come next. Polka seemingly slipped by accident and fell down from the ball making a loud thud.
However, the juggling clubs were still juggling by themselves despite Polka is on the floor. The curtain closes again to hide it from us despite that we've already seen it.
"What was that Calli?" [Edge]
"It's this space, everything you see is real and it's not an illusion." [Calli]
"So that was part of her skill?" [Edge]
"One can have more than 1 gifts, like most people are blessed with mana and come with another gift of their own." [Calli]
The curtain rose again and polka demonstrated various tricks such as tightrope walking, jumping through a fire hoop by herself, and getting a massage by an elephant. She was very clumsy but the settings and the stunts all looked so dazzling to me. At last, she performed magic tricks that dumbfounded the disinterested Pekora. The performance came to an end with Polka and the rest of the troupe bowing at us.
It's still early so we went out to play at the other attractions instead, Pekora seems to be haggling with Polka about making a deal with her after the show. I remembered about needing a map so I ran towards them.
"That's why I'm saying you should come to Pekoland, we will cover your expenses peko."[Pekora]
"There's no need, I'm planning on wandering all over the human continent anywa-"[Polka]
"Polka! Do you have a map?" [Edge]
"Oh, of course I do. How can I help you, dear? " [Polka]
"I need a map and I couldn't get it anywhere I went." [Edge]
"I'm sorry, I only have 1 and besides the map of Yamato is strictly forbidden because it might contain secretive information that our country intends to kee-."
Before Polka is finished Pekora stuffed her hand into her pocket dimension and pulled out a parchment.
"It's a little bit old but you can just take this and scram. Don't interrupt the adults talking here peko." [Pekora]
"Wait, how could you have one in the first place Pekora!" [Polka]
I took the bundled parchment and opened it to check the content. I found the village we were in and finally tracked down our destination. The Frozen Vault is located in the mountain range of Yamato. But something's wrong about the direction we're heading in, Calli said we're heading North but according to the map Pekora gave, we are heading East all along. The stops we made were right and we are with no deviation going in the right place. It's just that the direction she gave me was wrong, what's the catch here? I went back to Pekora to reconfirm my doubts.
"I have a lot of children you can play to, I'm sure you'll like that right peko." [Pekora]
"Pekora!" [Edge]
"What?" [Pekora]
"The map.., is it correct?" [Edge]
Pekora looks at me seemingly very annoyed by my presence.
"OF COURSE IT'S CORRECT!! WHY WOULD IT BE WRONG!!" [Pekora]
"Ok..." [Edge]
I understand her frustration of being pestered by me so I can assume that the map is correct by all means. But I couldn't make it out on why Calli and Miko would want me to believe we're going North instead of East. I can't ask Miko or Calli about it and Polka is locked in conversation so I need to ask someone else.
Trying to communicate with the troupe was futile, I had nobody to go to unless I waited until Polka was done with Pekora. I shifted my attention to playing at the circle booths while thinking about how to deal with the situation. I picked up a shooting game with the grand prize of getting a stuffed bear.
"You suck *Guh*." [Calli]
Calli seems to have been right beside me for some while now watching me miss the targets by a huge margin.
"You're aiming for the red one, am I right?" [Calli]
She picked me up and rested me on her shoulders. She positioned herself so that i could align to the target.
"Now aim and shoot."[Calli]
I fired my last shot and when I opened my eyes I knew I missed.
"Why did you close your eyes? " [Calli]
"The recoil was big..." [Edge]
"You didn't close them previously." [Calli]
"I'm sorry..."[Edge]
"Don't be, it's just a game." [Calli]
I felt that Calli saw through me, I only just came to trust her for less than a few days and now I'm back at square one...
Afterward, I tried out all the booths but I didn't manage to win anything. The booth closed down one by one and the flickering lights slowly faded out. Polka asked us to exit the circus and gave her closing speech.
"It has been a fun day for all of us! However, all circus must come to an end so that the magic stays within you."[Polka]
With the flick of a wrist, the cIrcus disappeared and we found ourselves standing at our original position next to our camp. Polka got on to her bicycle and prepared to bid us goodbye. I ran up to her to thank her.
"Thank you Polka, I never had so much fun before." [Edge]
"Don't sweat it, you should thank Maou-sama instead for making everything happen. See ya kid, I'll be back." [Polka]
"Goodbye Polka." [Edge]
The Fennec rode off into the distance along with her song and finally swallowed by the darkness.
"MAOU-SAMA SEE YOU IN CLOVER!!! " [Polka]
With that declaration, she's really gone now. I hugged Miko tightly and thanked her for the wonderful surprise.
"FAQ Miko" [Edge]
Miko was surprised but she burst into laughter.
"FAQ is love~." [Miko]
Until it was all over, nobody noticed that Pekora was gone. I asked if we should search for her but they say it's just how she rolls.
