Chapter 38:Infiltration(1)
On the next morning of the field trip, Calli gets a surprise at the start of the day.
"I'm sorry Calli, could you please forgive me?"[Edge]
"What?.. Why?"[Calli]
Calli is confused by his actions so she decides wanting to know why
"For disobeying your orders and coming here on my own"[Edge]
"..."[Calli]
Calli had a pause and replied.
"Ahem, apology accepted now let's get going." [Calli]
We traverse through the forest at a steady pace and killing the wandering undead with minimum voice and leave no tracks behind after we're done. In just a day we managed to kill more than 100 of them. At the end of the first day, we relaxed in the pocket dimension. Calli has been looking in my direction for the whole day,
'I wonder if there's anything wrong with my fac- '
'Fuck! Shion played that trick on my eyes earlier yesterday.'
After the dinner, Calli spoke up.
"I need to have a word with Edge, can you lent me one of your rooms?" [Calli]
"HAHAHA! sure thing, just take the one on the right down the hallway." [Botan]
We entered the room and Calli touches my face gently.
"Who did it?"[Calli]
"Shion did it as a prank. She said it'll make me look better" [Edge]
Calli noticed my eyes have become more gentle compared to how it usually is. I don't think Noel noticed it yet.
'This feels embarrassing, I want to know what does she think of it?' [Edge]
"That brat, I'll deal with her as soon as this is over." [Calli]
"So what do you think of it?... Do you like me this way better?" [Edge?]
"Not one bit, but you're still my child regardless of which." [Calli]
That statement makes me happy and not happy at the same time. As she was analyzing it I recalled the question Shion asked when we first met.
"Dad, what's the curse of immortality?"
Calli's hands stopped moving and resumed after the slight pause.
"You heard it from her as well?" [Calli]
"Is that the reason you can't die?" [Edge]
"Kinda." [Calli]
"Is there a reason you didn't tell me about it?"[Edge]
"How did she change the shape of your eyes? I've never seen a magecraft of this level" [Calli]
"It was a plaque with a triangular mirror in the middle. She called it an artifact. " [Edge]
"I'm not sure I can revert it with my current abilities I migh-" [Calli]
I remove her hands from my face and just sit down on the bed
"It's fine, it will revert in a month's time. Just answer my questions."[Edge]
Calli let out a breath and sat down.
"I didn't tell you because I'm afraid you might tell others, you can never expect where you'll meet an immortal." [Calli]
"So Shion is one?" [Edge]
"Yes" [Calli]
"Mio?" [Edge]
"Yeah" [Calli]
"So you can't die if you're cursed?" [Edge]
I suddenly had a bold idea in my head.
"Not really, you still die when you're killed but there are a few exceptions." [Calli]
"How so?" [Edge]
"Necromancy, the ability to raise the dead could allow the user to live through any fatal wounds."[Calli]
"The reason behind immortality is the integration of the gift with the person in question. So the person literally became attached to the skill itself and stopped aging. " [Calli]
"Therefore when a necromancer reaches that point-" [Calli]
"They literally can't die..." [Edge]
"Normal necromancers could only prolong their time as they age until their memories deteriorate. Becoming an empty husk eventually." [Calli]
I wanted to hold that thought to myself but I felt I just had to ask it.
"Do I have it in me to reach that point in the future?" [Edge]
Calli sat down so she matches my eye level.
"I'm not sure that's something you might want because you're no longer human at that point."[Calli]
"But at least I have you." [Edge]
Calli eyes widened, and she had a dark expression but then she suppressed it and smiled cheerfully
"Let's not talk about that for now. We have a long day tomorrow and I'm already feeling tired. Let's just sleep for now okay?" [Calli]
I felt anger because I felt she thinks that I might not be able to reach that stage, maybe she thinks my current progress is still not good enough and she only hoped for me to just lived a simple life.
We are going to sleep on the same bed so I plan to voice out my discontent later. I pretended to be asleep until the middle of the night, I changed my breathing rhythm all of the sudden to check if Calli is still awake.
"As expected, she's awake."
"Calli I know you're awake"[Edge]
*Zzz*[Calli]
"Ever since I learned Ki I noticed how you will change your breathing whenever I'm awake and you change it back to normal whenever I'm asleep during the night."[Edge]
*Zzz*[Calli]
"I don't know why you did it but I do keep track of it, it was funny at first but it stopped being funny after it went past 9 months. Eventually, I figured out that you don't sleep at all." [Edge]
*Zzz* [Calli]
"I don't know the reason why, maybe you don't need to. I thought that you're just aware of me at the beginning but now I think it's because you're always trying to protect me. " [Edge]
"I cant promise you that I'll reach great heights" [Edge]
*Zzzz* [Calli]
"But at least I hope that one day I can become strong enough to watch over you as you sleep" [Edge]
*Zzzzz*[Calli]
'She still won't budge huh, I guess I'll sleep for real this time.' [Edge]
I turn around facing my back towards her and try to fall back into sleep. Suddenly something lunges at me from behind.
'!!!' [Edge]
2 hands wrapped around me and hugged me tightly against her body. It was Calli, and I felt a warmth inside of me. I held her hand and fell asleep afterward with ease.
