Kuon could hear his companions scream at the fire. Some of them were cries of sadness. He shook in fury, but nothing was coming to his head. 


‘If only there was something. A chance at least.’ His eyes moved all around him. He could see only dark clouds and smoke. 


There were fires burning while screams could be heard all around them. He turned to take a glance at the people behind him. Adela was the only female among them. ‘She needs to be protected.’ 


His eyes moved to look at the three cadets who were sick. ‘One is sick with fever, the other two with cuts on their legs from the training.’ 


He looked back at the Vatakku soldiers hooting at the burning tent in front of them. ‘If only there were more people to back me up.’ He reached for the knife in his pocket. ‘What if I take aim on the leaders eyes? That might buy some time for the others to run.’
