Chapter 5
The rest of the week was dull for me. Amy and Luke noticed and every lunch came up with a new cheer just to make me smile. It was sweet, it really was but I just needed to wallow a little more. Their attempts were funny but not ha-ha funny.
“Who’s that girl?” sung Luke raising his eye brows in curiosity as I approached the table. Amy joined in singing in her own cheer leader kind of way.
“She looks so fine.”
“Who’s that girl...?
“She looks so fabulous!”
I smiled and offered them a laugh, nudging both of them hoping it would get them to stop. Today they used that song. I was wearing wrinkled grey sweat pants with a hot pink tank top and a regular black open hoodie. I was far from fabulous.
“How was cheer practice today?” I asked taking out my chicken sandwich that was in my container in my bag. I watched as Luke eyed my treasure lustfully and ravenously. He was not getting. I would make sure of that. Plus I was definitely not in the mood to play Miss Gymnast, not today.
“Actually it was great. I am the new team captain now. Taylor made a dramatic show and decided to quit.” she said without a hint of sympathy in her tone. I think the rest of the team didn’t care either. They must have felt a good bit of liberty at last.
Luke suddenly cleared his throat looking at Amy with narrowed eyes as if sending her a silent message I saw her blush before they both turned to me.
I bit into my sandwich and drank a sip of water to let it go down my dry throat easily.
“What’s with the telepathy what do you want to tell me?” I asked getting straight to the point of continuing my lunch letting out a few moans of pleasure at the perfect blend of mayonnaise with soft chicken breast as its smooth texture danced with my taste buds.
“I asked Amy out a few days ago...” Luke began looking at me very nervously like I was a ticking time bomb or something.
“And… “I said continuing to devour the sandwich. Today Mum used black pepper. It was yummy.
“We are officially dating!!”Amy squealed raising her pompoms in the air like she was performing an actual cheer.
I smiled with my mayonnaise mustache and engulfed the rest of the sandwich before gulping down all the water that was left in Luke’s glass and let out a satisfied breath. That was some good lunch.
A loud burp escaped my throat and I cleaned my mouth with a napkin.
“Are you not gonna say anything?” Amy asked looking at me with rather an irritated glance.
I shrugged.
“Other than, ‘I called it!’ I have nothing to say,” I shrugged again, “I did see this coming for a while now. I just wondered when Luke finally got the balls to ask you out.” I smirked watching Luke as he so sneakingly intertwined his and Amy’s fingers over the table and gazing at her.
“Well congratulations guys I am happy for you. “I smiled, ‘now since Luke is now your boyfriend…” I leaned closer over the table and grabbed his shirt by his green collars, “if you ever and I mean ever do anything at all to make her cry even once. I know where to find you and trust me you won’t like it if I do.” I said faking a menacing tone and glaring at him with the sharpest glare I could muster.
He looked at me and smirked.
“Please the only thing you can scare is your own reflection. You can’t threaten a mouse.” He teased.
“But I really like Amy and I will make her happy. You can count on that.” he assured me with his green eyes sparkling with genuine honesty.
“Unfortunately for me I have officially become the third wheel.” I sighed dramatically and looked at their intertwined hands. I hope to have that someday. My mood somewhat lifted for the first time in days, I packed away my containers.
“Guys I have to go. It’s Friday and Biology needs me in his class about now.” I said standing up to get my bag.
“Crystal, wait...’Amy called, “Luke and I are going out later wanna join?” she offered. I know she desperately wanted me to tell her what has been going on. I don’t want to worry her with my problems and from the irritated look on Luke’s face I know he doesn’t want me hanging around while he takes her on a date.
‘Maybe another time okay?” I winked at Luke and he blushed in shock.
I smiled at her and quickly make my way to the lab again.
The halls were silent and empty.
I guess my lunch was over earlier than I thought. I continued on to my locker when a body smashed into me from behind. I was spun around so fast everything seemed to spin.
There was a black blur, a blade and pain. The ground welcomed me with a loud smack before the darkness set in.
My eyelids with lots of difficulty allowed me to adjust to the blinding white light of the room I was in. the intoxicating scent of disinfectant took over my sense of smell as I wondered where I was.
Was I at the hospital?
Baby blue eyes met mine and stared confused at the moment.
“She is awake.” He whispered. Then his face became clearer.
“Jordan what…what are you doing here?” I croaked out despite my dry throat. A glass of water was brought to in my line of sight but my hand felt too heavy to move and grab it. Staring at my hand, I realized that I had a number of wires and tubes going through my wrist. I hoped that whatever they gave me to numb the pain would never wear off. I am sacred to know how it feels like.
My chin was lifted up by different hands. They were a little rough at the same time comforting as the owner grazed the glass of water by my lips allowing me to take a sip. I nodded for him to take it away and he did.
Blake was standing by the door looking into space.
Jordan's eyes had bags under them while he looked at me. I turned my head to Félix as he put away the class back on the white counter by my head. When he turned back to me. I was speechless.
I thought Jordan looked unusually tired but Felix’s blue eyes were darker and almost blood shot. A part of me wondered whether he has been crying. His hair was more tousled than usual. What I couldn’t wrap my head around was the fact that instead of my parents or my best friends, they were the ones here.Where were my parents?
“May I ask what is going on?” I asked trying to sit up immediately regretting it once a sharp pain erupted from my abdomen. Kill me now!
I lay back almost immediately taking deep breaths.
“You were attacked during lunch at school.” Blake said walking towards me, “we had a delayed lesson and found you lying in a pool of your own blood so we called the police and the ambulance brought you here.”
The memory of that moment returned to me in flashes. The blur, the pain and the blade.
“I was stabbed…”I muttered to myself, “did you catch who did it?”
“No…” Felix said sounding very defeated. I blinked in surprise at the heaviness his voice carried.
“Did you call my parents?” I asked.
“Yes they came by every morning since that incident.” Jordan answered taking a seat by me.
“Wait how long have I been in here?” I asked astonished. How long have I been out? I needed to study that weekend for the maths test on Monday!! Did I miss that too?"
All the thoughts kept coming, the questions, the shock and the fear, getting a hold of myself was proving to be very difficult.
“Calm down, Crystal. Your heart rate is going through the roof!” Jordan exclaimed looking at the monitor and the loud beeping noise made its way to my ears. Oh my Lord what in the world happened? Why would someone do this to me? Am I being watched? Stalked perhaps. Oh my God what if they are spying on my parents too. I don’t want to lose my only family. Oh my God do Amy and Luke know? Where are they? Why haven’t I seen them yet?
“DOCTOR!!!” I heard Blake scream.
“Calm down Crystal, please.” I heard Félix plead. His hands covered my small palm rubbing soothing circles but that seemed to make the situation much worse. Why was he being so nice all of a sudden?
I heard the loud beeps of the monitor slow down to a dangerously low rate almost inaudible.
“Doctor!!” I heard Jordan shout. I stared up at dark eyes empty like an abyss of the doctor who came in a rush as he looked at my vitals. Glancing down he had pushed in the syringe in one of the I-V bags and squeezed.
Whatever it was had me groggy almost immediately. Felix’s eyes connected with mine in horror. I did not understand what was happening. There were swirls of blue everywhere. Baby blue, dark blue, some green and then there was black. Lots and lots of black.
The sounds on the monitor became loud again except this time it was one long loud
Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepppppppppppp.
