"What his phone is down, what is the meaning of this, this is ridiculous," looking at the ugly expression on her father's face she was sure then, he was eavesdropping on them. It was a big shock to her. She didn't want to believe it but it was truly him, Mr. Gubi was one of the few people she trusted in the past, and here it turns out he's one of the worst. She was lost for a while before she was able to collect herself.
'This wasn't the time for grieving.'
She was sure he didn't come near her which means the device must be with her father. She reckoned the only time he came close to any of them was when he opened the door for her father. He must have put something on him then. It was too late, but it won't help at all to let his ears on them, she wasn't sure how she could use it to their advantage. If she let him listen, they won't be able to talk freely, and if she let him, he would soon realize they were faking it because it was obvious he was bugging them.
She looked at her father, anger was swelling in her chest. She shook her head in the end, disappointment replacing her anger. It was futile to blame him now, and could only blame herself, she chose him.
Clearing her anger, she said, "Father, I think he was listening to our conversation."
He already started to believe it himself, but he wasn't happy that she implied he was bugged. He still checked his clothes to make sure, but his face twisted uglily as he took a small device from the pocket of his pants. He humphed and looked away not knowing how else to react to his embarrassing situation in front of this daughter of his. He didn't notice her approaching him until she took the device from his hands and threw it away.
"Hey, what are you doing, we need that evidence."
What evidence, that didn't even qualify as the tip of the iceberg, she pointed grudgingly with her head for her father to follow her inside, she didn't want to alarm Mr. Gubi more than he already is.
Sitting in front of each other again, she said, "actually, father, there's still more that I didn't tell you, just in case he was listening to us," she stopped for a moment, "I hope you take what I say seriously this time."
After he nodded sullenly, she continued, "back then, when I found the cameras, I didn't really know what to make of it, I just removed them in a roundabout way."
"You should have told me then, we wouldn't be in this mess," his ego got the best of him, he was just looking for a way to avoid the responsibility.
"I was confused, and you didn't help me feel welcomed back then to trust you," she had even more to say but her goal wasn't to bicker with her stubborn father.
Shuji has other thoughts though, "had you told me back then, these things could have been avoided, he stayed in our house for almost a week."
This time he ticked a nerve, she shouted, "father, he stayed in the house for 4 years, and I found him out in just one week, and I wasn't the stubborn one, who exposed everything to him and let him escape."
"If you knew he was listening, why didn't you say anything? Look how he escaped now, huh."
"Father, let me remind you, contrary to my wish you brought him along, so I was trying to write everything on my phone when you went out of your way and revealed everything I told you, even though I made it clear for you in your office and in the car that he might be eavesdropping on us," her father went silent; unable to switch the blame to her anymore, he could only stare at her angrily, and a "preposterous," left his mouth.
She shook her head, he's just so stubborn, he can't stomach being wrong, she gave up on him, "let me add that I didn't say everything, I let him only know about the cameras and my intention to fire him, what I have is more serious, otherwise, I wouldn't have been this careful," she shook her head, and continued, "but It seems you're not ready to listen to this, so please call a detective for me."
His pressed lips were wiggling with anger, but nothing left his mouth. He didn't dare to deny it.
"Ok, I will call them myself."
"Go, ahead," he leaned back on his chair, she would soon realize he wasn't wrong when he didn't take her seriously.
She walked away from her father and called the police, she was transferred to nonemergency line, and a woman inquired about her call.
"Hello, can you transfer my call to a detective? I have something important to report."
The woman tried to get more information, but Lanru insisted on talking to a detective, so the woman complied, she said, "wait a moment."
Not long after, a deep voice came through the phone, "how can I help you, this is Detective Park with you."
"Hello Detective Park, I'm the daughter of Master Shuji, of the Ning family, I have something serious to report, are you willing to come over for a talk," at least she can use her father this way. They both stayed silent for a moment, maybe that won't be enough, she added, "We can make a video call to let you know I'm not playing around. My father is with me."
People didn't usually joke around with the police since the phone numbers are registered, and from her tone, he could guess she wasn't lying, "where can I meet you?" he can't ignore someone from the Ning family, he just hoped it wasn't something stupid.
After telling him her location, she returned and sat before Shuji, he had a sneer on his face, it didn't last long though. It appeared on her face instead as she said, "a detective is coming, I should have done that from the start, what a waste of time," she threw it back at him, her time was precious as well, and a lot of it might get wasted because of his stubbornness.
Her father looked like he ate a fly, but couldn't utter a single word.
When the detective came he saw her father and was reassured that it wasn't a complete waste of his time. He wasn't aware that her father didn't leave and tagged along only out of his stubbornness. Shuji was just annoyed and couldn't accept that he was wrong, he was still unaware of how serious the situation was. He interrupted her once she talked about the cameras, "are you sure they are cameras," from what she said before, it looked like she was just bullsh**ing, what black circles, he added, "I went to see your room personally, I didn't see anything wrong with the lamps," the detective didn't object, he needed to know more details.
"I found two suspicious wifis with full signal in my room, that's how I found them."
her father was taken aback wasn't just two black circles, but he wasn't ready to give up, "don't you know that we have a smart house system, they must be part of that."
"They disappeared once I unplugged the lamps, wait a second," she didn't want to hear more about the smart house system, she took out her phone, and showed them some photos, "see this," the close-up shots showed the camera lens, they have a distinctive look that can't be mistaken, "I wouldn't have disturbed you had I not been sure."
"These are indeed camera lenses," the detective confirmed as well.
This time her father shut up, he couldn't find any way to refute her.
"Anyway, just yesterday someone came to my room in the middle of the night, and when he found out my room was closed he tried to break into my room through the window, fortunately, I started to lock my room after I found the cameras, otherwise I don't know what might have happened to me,"
The detective was alerted, and her father was dumbstruck, he said "why didn't tell me this."
She was really tired from repeating herself, but she knew he was shocked right now, "because he was eavesdropping on us, father," she ignored him and continued her story.
The more her father listened to her, the more his stubbornness and his doubts were disarmed. This wasn't something a kid would make up. Everything she said clicked together. His face twisted wildly when she threw another bomb, "Father, have you heard of the serial rapist, they call him the silent pollen," she wasn't sure her father knew him as he wasn't infamous in the national media, he wasn't a serial killer yet.
He didn't know who this silent pollen was, but he knew what a serial rapist meant, "what does that have to do with anything?" he could guess what she was getting at, but he couldn't accept it.
The detective on the other hand turned serious, "Wait, I think we need to take this to a more discreet place."
