Chapter 47: The Human Condition

“Sera.”

She whipped around, Zane was standing behind her. Relief was slashed across his face as he covered the space between them with two large steps. Then Sera was in his arms. He held her tight as she buried her head into his chest, her body heaving with sobs of joy and anguish. He was safe, he was still human. Her mother had almost taken everything from them.

“This will not end well for you daughter,”

Sera ignored the words, directing her attention to Lonny who was crawling to his knees. She went to move towards him, but Zane beat her to it. He crossed the room quickly, reaching for Lonny and helping him to his feet. Zane practically carried him from the spot he’d been thrown and helped him lean against the wooden door. Lonny nodded his thanks, his eyes alert, though his breathing still labored—he would be alright.
