Kelly put a bag of food on the desk. Miriam nodded and unwrapped the bagel as if she hadn't eaten all day. "Just Mark's lawyer." She looked at the food in her hand. "How'd you know I was hungry?"
Kelly smiled and left.
Miriam sighed and puzzled over the portrait.
Remembering those idyllic first few weeks of her marriage to Mark, she bit her lip. He'd been charming and sweet and she'd fallen hard for him. She shook her head of the memories and promptly forgot about the phone call from his lawyer. Her computer called to her.
An hour later, the phone rang again. Kelly didn't answer so Miriam picked up the receiver.
"Designs on You," she answered.
"I'm looking for Miriam Stokes," the gruff voice on the other end of the line said.
Not paying full attention, Miriam said, "Speaking."
"Ms. Stokes, I'm Jay Kendrick of the Philadelphia News. May I ask you a few questions?"
Her full attention now on the phone call she asked, "In regard to what?"
