Gus's Protection

"Mim, you might be in danger. I can't shake the feeling."

"I'll see you tonight, Gus."

Gus didn't like coincidences. He didn't even like calling something a coincidence. Things always ended up being connected. You just had to dig deeply enough.

Fred had traced the mysterious wire transfer to the same bank Gus had used in the year he'd been assigned to the D.C. office of the FBI.

The branch had been down the street from the office, making it convenient to stay in the neighborhood. Most employees he knew felt the same way. He had heard rumors high-ranking government officials also used the bank for many transactions.

Despite knowing the branch manager, he suddenly felt unsure he would get any information from her. He dialed the number.

"Strategem Bank. Lois White speaking."

"Lois. Gus Macpherson."

"Gus? You back in D. C., or did I hear the right rumors that you retired?"

"I'm retired."

"Did you finally put all those crime bosses in jail or did you give up?"
