Luck

Sweat rolled down his back as he gripped the cold handle of the machine. This was his last chance if he failed again this time...

He shivered at just the thought of it.

Gritting his teeth, he tightened his grip and pulled down the handle with all his strength, hoping that it would change his doomed future.

On a billboard-sized LED screen, different words and colors flashed by rapidly, dyeing his body in lights of white, green, and blue with occasional purple and gold.

Each second felt like an eternity as he stood there waiting, praying solemnly with his eyes closed.

That was until he heard a chime, a sound which he thought came straight from heaven.

The joy he felt at that moment was indescribable, his heart skipped a beat and he opened his eyes in a flash

"Praise the Lo-"

He was about to jump in joy and shout praises to god when he caught the words written on the purple screen.

Black Bold letters that declared his death sentence.

After a few minutes of silence a shriek resounded in the room, a sound you wouldn't expect from a 15-year-old "male"...

"Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!"

.

James screamed as he violently tapped his phone.

"Ahhh! my terrible luck won't leave me."

"200 spins and all I get is this shit epic."

James threw his phone angrily on the bed. What pissed him off even more was that his friend was boasting all through yesterday how he got the limited event skin in 100 spins.

He let out a deep sigh before he started getting ready for school unwillingly.

James Barnes, a normal 15-year-old kid you would find anywhere, not the top student, nor was he the quiet kid. But if you would ask all his close friends what's unique about him, they would all say the same thing.

"James has the worst luck in video games!"

As with the incident this morning, James' luck in games has never been good, from getting randomly spawn killed to having trash luck in loots and gacha. James had it all.

"I even spent all my monthly allowance on it"

James was now on the train to school still lamenting the incident, yesterday when his friend Nathan was bragging about how good luck was, James got all pumped up and declared that he would buy the gacha too. Hearing this all his friends tried to stop him, as they knew how bad his luck was. But he didn't listen and instead spent all night doing rituals that he found online to increase his luck.

Though all his efforts were in vain.

Trying to console himself he opened the game on his phone to look at the epic he got this morning.

"Well it looks kinda cool, doesn't it?"

Even he knew that it was nothing but lies, that skin was literally trash.

Pop!

While he was immersed in his thoughts, when an in-game notification suddenly popped up on his phone, curious to know what it was he quickly tapped on it.

"ARE YOU TIRED OF PULLING SO MANY GACHAS!!?? TRY NOW OUR LIMITED-TIME GACHA WITH GUARANTEED SPECIAL REWARDS AFTER THE FIRST 10 SPINS!!"

"What guaranteed rewards, it's all just a scam!!" James immediately flipped out.

He knew all about these so-called "guaranteed" special rewards, he had already been scammed by it many times. Although it costs more than the normal gacha on the promise that you get a guaranteed reward, it only gives some random epic item that nobody would want. Still, James could not complain as even that was better than things he would normally get.

"Sigh! I should buy it anyway, it's only 10 spins and I could even get something better than the epic this morning."

Ignorant that soon and even years later he would regret this decision.

He then casually pressed the buy button, before mumbling in a low voice

" Even though I know it's going to be another…"

"...trash epic"

James said in a daze as he stared at the large screen in front of him, his mouth open in shock.

On the screen which was now deep purple in color were big black letters that sealed his fate, the system he would get when he would cross over to the other world, a world he was told was rampant with various monsters and dragons from fantasy, where a single mistake could cost him his life. In such a world he would have to survive with a system that could possibly be the worst compatible of them all.

"Greatest Athlete System"

James read out the words in front of him, still in a daze.

He then felt a small tug on his shoes, as if someone was trying to remove his shoes, he looked down to see what was happening, only to find that his legs had disappeared. Realizing what was happening, he desperately tried to resist.

"No, wait…"

But as if to send him off immediately before he could complain all his other body parts also started to quickly disappear.

"Nooooooooooooo!!"

With that shriek, James completely disappeared, as if he was never there, to begin with.

After a brief silence, a cold deep voice resounded in the white room.

"Sigh! Next!"
