" I have returned, young master....? "
With a couple of paper, ink, and quill pen, Leila returned to a cold atmosphere inside the library. Leila had somewhat expected this situation to happen but she never thought that Eve would be so displeased to the point that she would show her emotions without bothering to hide it.
Her glare caused Leila to feel chills even though she wasn't the one on the receiving end. Meanwhile, Kayo remained reading the books unperturbed by Eve'a hateful glare.
" ...Young master? "
Leila called out to him once more. This time Kayo showed her a page in the book and pointed at a character, repeating the same actions he did towards Eve earlier.
" How do you say this? "
" Oh uh, It is spoken as " Khal ". "
Kayo then nodded as he turned back to the book. He then said, " Hmmm.. I see. Leave the pen and paper beside me. After that, get me some history books too. "
" ...Will do. " Leila moved while taking a glance at Eve whom seemed to composed herself.
Eve took a deep breath and her serene demeanor returned once more. She had decided to no longer bother with the likes of Kayo.
What he did to her, she decided to do the same. Eve glanced at Leila who moved towards the furthest left book shelf.
Although she hid it, She was more than surprised to see her best friend serving someone as Kayo. Initially, she believed that the one Leila was going to be serving was either her or her sister.
' Was it by grandfather's orders? or someone else? Surely she would never agree to serving someone like this boy. '
Eve couldn't help but be disappointed and once again mad by Kayo's existence. Her eyes couldn't help but look back towards Kayo whom seemed to be silently mouthing the alphabet.
' Just who is he and where did he come from? '
What she found even more surprising was that right after his arrival which was yesterday, he immediately found his way towards this little library.
' Did Leila bring him here or did he order her to bring him here? '
Eve immediately dismissed the former as she had judged it impossible because of the fact that Kayo's personality was unlikeable. She knows for a fact that Leila, like herself, abhoured people like Isaac and Kayo.
So the idea of Leila genuinely wanting to serve him herself was improbable whilst the idea that she was forced to do it was more reasonable. Having thought so again, her despise for Kayo only grew as she felt that her best friend was forced to do something she did not want to.
She knew how much of a professional Leila was, even in her young age. She will not cry nor complain once and will fulfill her duties wholeheartedly.
That was also one of the reasons Eve wanted Leila as her exclusive maid but nevertheless, it was all ruined by Kayo's arrival. Once more, she found herself staring daggers at Kayo whom seemed to be completely unaffected by it.
" Tch. "
She clicked her tongue as Kayo's attractive face upset her even more.
" Here they are, Young master. I will serve Young master and Young miss some tea and snacks before I proceed to begin our first lesson. Would this be alright, Young master? "
" Mhmmm.. " Kayo nodded without looking at her as if completely focused on reading the book he was holding.
Eve scoffed at the way Kayo treated her bestfriend. Leila on the otherhand, simply went to do what she said and left the library.
Once more, silence filled the library and the two children's breaths were the only thing audible. The library returned to it's peaceful, quiet, and serene environment. Eve returned to her studies while Kayo focused on memorizing the entire alphabet and phonics.
After a minute or so, Leila returned to a calm atmosphere bringing two empty tea cups and a porcelain tea pot filled with hot tea.
She laid placed the tea cups on the table and proceeded to pour tea in it. It's sweet and herbal fragrance scattered across the library, making Eve look away from her book.
She slightly smiled as she received the tea from Leila. This tea was something that Leila served her whenever they were studying in this library together. As she took the cup, she took a deep breath as the sweet herbal fragrance calmed her nerves.
" As always, your tea is remarkable, Leila. " Eve commented as she began to take a sip from the hot tea.
" I thank Lady Eve for her kind words. " She then took a courtesy bow before putting a plate with snacks on the middle of the table.
As Leila was doing so, Kayo suddenly spoke. " You're quite the hardworker, aren't you? hard to believe you're the same age as us. "
Leila turned to Kayo with a surprised expression as she had never expected him to speak to her that way much less complement her. Eve on the other hand, frowned as she also heard the unexpected compliment to Leila from Kayo.
' What is he planning? '
She was extremely suspicious of Kayo whom seemed to speak out of character but regardless, she didn't say anything. After all, they had only met last night so Eve couldn't confidently say she knew Kayo's entire personality.
But this just made her even more guarded towards Kayo. As for Kayo whom returned to silently read the books, though he had a calm expression on the outside, he was frowning inwardly.
' Why did I say that? That was completely illogical and a meaningless move. However, the moment I thought that she was a hard working child, those words suddenly came out naturally. '
Kayo began to ponder more and more about his mistake while Leila on the other hand, smiled with a relaxed face as she said, " Thank you, young master. "
Eve then turned from shocked to extremely puzzled as she saw this gentle expression from Leila whom always seemed to have a stiff and disciplined smile.
' Could she be...? No way... Leila, that's too shallow even for you! '
She began to speculate that Leila was being attracted to Kayo's adorable face. As all these immature and irrational thoughts circulated in Eve's mind, Kayo plainly drank the tea before speaking.
" Seat here then we can start. " He said as he pointed to the sest beside him.
Leila nodded and she sat beside Kayo. As she did so, she began to feel uneasy realizing how close she was to Kayo.
' What is this feeling....? '
The feeling itself wasn't unpleasant, rather it was quite the opposite. She had no idea what to call this feeling. Despite being aware that she herself is being unusually nervous, she also can't help but want to be closer to Kayo.
It was a dilemma that confused her young mature mind. Then, when she found herself meeting Kayo's strong gaze, her heart felt like it skipped a beat.
She immefiately faced the other way as she couldn't control her expression.
' W-w-w-what's wrong with me?! Why did I find young master's eyes attractive..?
Oh no! I can't believe I just abruptly turned by face away from young master which is not only rude and disrespectful, but he might also think that I'm a weird girl! '
As her priorities between being a maid and a girl began to mix up, her young maiden heart couldn't help but overwhelm her young mature mind that had never felt the emotion of love towards a significant other.
Her worries turned from being disrespectful and rude towards her master to whether she was presentable and did she do a bad impression towards Kayo.
Eve's mouth agaped as she saw this spectacle and for once in her life, she saw Leila, whom always maintained a stiff and emotionless smile, incredibly flustered that she had to cover her face out of embarrassment.
' What did he do to her!? '
Once again, she glared at Kayo whom was clearly the cause of Leila's out of character actions. After a minute or so, Leila somehow managed to compose herself despite the new feeling that she felt inside.
" Ahem, so young master. Should I explain the entirety of the alphabet for you, or Should I just answer you if you have any questions? " Though Leila was looking at Kayo, she couldn't look directly in his eyes so she directed her gaze at the other features of his face.
This however, only made things worse as Leila subconsciously engraved Kayo's face in her mind.
" I've gotten the gist of these books. Help me read instead. Tell me if I made a wrong pronounciation. "
" ...Will do. "
Kayo proceeded to read words out loud and much to both Leila and Eve's surprise, Kayo had actually smoothly pronounced and read everything.
After completely reading everything in a page of a book, he then turned to them as he asked, " Well? any mistakes? "
" A-actually... there's none. Young master, have you perhaps been taught to read before? "
Because the era was set back to the medieval times, commoners still didn't have the privilage to get education. Only nobles and merchants had the capability to read and write.
While there are some commoners that can read and write, about 80% of their population was uneducated and illiterate.
" Nope, not once. Anyway, my pronounciation is correct and I can read properly, Writing is next. "
Kayo moved the bookd to the side and placed the paper, quill and ink in front of him. Kayo spent a moment to stared at the blank page before taking a deep breath.
' What is he doing? ' Eve thought as she had long been distracted from her studies.
" Young master? " Leila subtly called to Kayo whom seemed to be taking a long time as he stared at the blank paper with the quill on his hand.
Suddenly, his demeanor change. His posture straightened and his expression became solemn. He held the quill on his hand elegantly as he subtly dipped it on the ink.
Both Eve and Leila was once again shocked as they felt the atmosphere around Kayo change to an unnatural degree. It was as if he was a completely different person. His quill slowly approached the paper and soon, his hand began to move exquisitely.
He appeared like a gentle scholar whom specialized in calligraphy. After writing for a couple of times, he stopped as he slowly put down the quill. He then turned to Leila who was still dazed.
" Check it, please. "
As he handed over the paper, Leila and even Eve moved to inspect it. In front of them was the most refined and exquisite written letters they had ever seen. Their eyes turned wide as they looked back and forth between the paper and Kayo.
They were filled with disbelief as they saw this handwritting that's even more beautiful than the famous scholars in their Kingdom. After a minute or so, Kayo's demeanor returned back to his original arrogant and self-centered personality.
He grinned as he rested his back in a lazy manner.
" Well judging by your faces, It's good, Right? "
He then rudely took the papers from Leila's hands and proceeded to walk towards the exit of the library. Before he reached the door, he said " Leila, Bring me the history books to my room. Im going there to rest. "
" ....But young master, It is not allowed to take any book from this library. " Though they were surprised by his abrupt actions, Leila was the first to recover and immediately informed Kayo about a rule inside the library.
Kayo stopped at the door and after a moment of silence, he spoke. " Hmmm, I'll return later afternoon then. "
With that, he exited the room leaving both Leila and Eve in silence as the exquisite handwriting remained in their head. Eve stared at the exit a little longer as she pondered, " Kayo... just who are you? "
As soon as Kayo left the library, His arrogant smile and overbearing demeanor disappeared and all that was left was an emotionless face with eyes that seemed devoid of life.
He moved quickly, making use of the blindspots he had discovered. He was able to return to his room without bumping into anyone.
Kayo immediately pulled out the mirror that he had been brought before and from there, he absentmindedly stared at his face as the thoughts in his mind grew louder and louder.
His eyebrows furrowed as he began to glare at his own reflection.
' Something is wrong with me. '
To him, his expressions, emotions, impluses, personas- all this must be controlled in order to become a full-fledged assassin. In order for Kayo to successfully become a famous spy, he had a created several hundreds of personas of himself, all different from one another.
He had to do this in order to fully immerse himself in his role whilst spying on his enemies. Normally, a normal person would have another one or two persona meanwhile Kayo whom had several hundred of personas, one third of them even belonging to the opposite gender. All these were a necessity in order to become a successful assassin.
At least, a successful assassin in his master's eyes. So, although he couldn't become a 1st rate assassin, he made a path towards becoming a successful assassin by mastering methods such as spying and disguising.
No mather what identity, whether it be a prominent man or a seductive lady, Kayo was succesful in immersing himself in such roles that even his senior brothers and sisters could not tell it was him.
His acting was so great that he had even fooled several wives and husband of his targets. This was also one of the reasons why his master had fully dedicated himself to one of his greatest creations.
" Faceless. " This was the codename that was given to him by his own master. It truly is miraculous for Kayo to be able to remain sane.
' What pisses me off is that, that's the only thing I have going for me. '
Kayo was still unsatisfied by the fact that his ultimate ambition was left unfulfilled.
' Back to the matter at hand. System, is there any abnormality within me? Specifically my mental or pyschological state? '
[ The answer the host is searching for is not supported by this system. Please ask a different question. ]
Kayo stared at the message in front of him before sighing in defeat. He closed his eyes and lied down on his bed.
' The only logical reason I can think of is- my immature body. Children, especially in my body's age, is more prone to act based on impulses.
Just earlier, I thought to myself that Leila was quite a hardworker. However, I never intended to compliment her. The same happened with my writing practice.
These child-like impulses seemed to be harder to control than I thought. However, with control and discipline, I should be able to subdue this feeling. '
Having found a solution, Kayo's mind was cleared up and within a second, his cold demeanor went back to his over-bearing arrogant self.
