The Price of Vengeance (VI)

I can see the sun rising on the horizon. The air around me is dry, the atmosphere is a bit cool but in a couple of hours the weather will be warmer for sure.

On my back I feel the weight of my backpack, which is packed with the necessary supplies to survive in the elements for about 2 weeks.

"Haaa, I'm tired of getting up early"

You're pretty lazy Asriel"

"Early morning is not my strong suit..."

We both look up at the sky, towards the south-facing road.

It has been 1 week since the incident with Lavos. After making the decision to go in search of the elemental spirits we went to SDOF headquarters to report. There were several diverse comments, although finally they accepted after explaining that between waiting for the world to fix itself, or taking the risk to look for a possible solution was better than nothing.

Although most of them preferred that we stay in the city and send another group to explore, something that deep down I preferred in order to keep Maria safe from any conflict, she refused and stood firm in her decision to accompany me saying that it had to be us. Her strong conviction is something I have come to admire with great esteem, likewise I think that by staying by my side I will be able to protect her and likewise it is the best option to avoid the risk of the truth about her healing abilities being revealed.

In any case, I don't deny that the simple fact of going out excites me. Seeing new landscapes is one of my favorite pastimes, especially in this new reality where you never know what tomorrow will bring.

Sorry John, I don't think I can keep the promise to stand still. I know you are also researching the events of the day of the Apocalypse, but I just can't stay and do nothing. I hope we can meet again soon.

We had a couple of days to prepare for the long and indefinite journey, and so it was eventually time to say goodbye to our home.

"It's a pity" Maria said in a sigh.

"What thing?"

"I was finally able to be recognized as second in command at SDOF, they were already starting to have respect for me. How unfortunate that we had to resign from our posts"

"Well, it was unavoidable. You can still come back if you want"

"No way, this is much more entertaining. We're going into the unknown on an adventure to save the world, we're like the protagonists leaving the initial city. Just like in a video game!"

"Protagonists, huh? That doesn't sound bad"

Without having an idea of where to go we'll head south, in the same direction we saw Lavos get lost in the distance. Maybe we'll meet him again, and since we have the same goal we could cooperate. He has much more knowledge than us, his help would be quite useful.

And so our new story begins.

We both take a step towards the destiny that awaits us.
