The black pen of dark energy enveloped Alan suddenly, giving him no chance to run away as it wrapped around his body from head to toe.
After wrapping itself around Alan, the darkness solidified into a dark cloak around his body, covering Alan minus his head.
Alan checked himself out. "Wow, so this is my uniform?" He asked.
"Yes, but you can always change it if you like. The black cloak is the default uniform that's given to all Reapers who start."
"Oh, how do I change it?" Alan asked as truthfully, he didn't really like it all too much. It made him feel sinister and too menacing, and he worried it would scare people off too much.
Though on second thought, he felt it probably would have been fine since this is usually how people imagine reapers to be like.
"Figure it out yourself." The man said and handed him a black book.
Alan took the book and asked, "What's this?"
The man smirked. "Your death note. It's where you record your job and write your victims' names down."
His boss's words were shocking. "What!" Alan wanted to throw away the book immediately. Though he wasn't one to watch anime as he was just too busy, he knew about things like a 'death note' because of his wife, who watched some anime.
He remembered what happened to the main character from that anime and wanted nothing to do with this book.
As if the man knew Alan's thought he gave a chuckle "haha, I'm joking" He said afterwards with a straight and dead face.
"What?" Alan asked with a confused expression. 'Did this god just try to make a joke?' He thought to himself 'It was a lame joke…' Alan kept his thoughts a secret, in case his boss got angry.
"...."
Seeing Alan looking more weirded out rather than laughing, the man went silent and sighed 'One day... someone will laugh at that joke' He thought to himself as he continued "Reapers used to record their jobs on books but not anymore."
"Oh...so how do Reapers do it now?"
"We use a system I created. It's still pretty brand new, about 500 years old I'd say. Think or say open system," the man explained to Alan.
'Hmm... okay. Open System.' He thought, and a black interface with red writing appeared in front of him.
Welcome to the Reaper System:
Would you like to open your stats or check your daily job quota?
'Um..open stats' Alan tried thinking while also pressing the 'open stats' marker in front of him.
After that, the interface changed again:
Name: Alan
Job: Grim Reaper (N/A)
Species: Undead(Skeleton)
Reaper Lv: 1
balance:0
Exp: 0
Skills: Soul binds
"Wow, quite cool." Alan thought out loud as he stared at his stats in crimson red letters.
"Hm? What's there to be impressed about? You're pretty weak." The man said, ruining Alan's mood slightly.
"What's this Reaper level?" Alan asked.
"In your human terms, think of it as starting out a company for the first time. You don't immediately become a manager, do you? A reaper level works the same way, the higher it is, the higher your position is in the job, the more benefits are given to you."
"How many levels are there?" Alan asked, finding the entire system to be very fascinating.
The man smiled at Alan's question, clearly suggesting he won't answer it and for Alan 'to figure it out.
Alan checked his Job quota and thought 'open job'.

...
Alan's face darkened the more he read about his job quota and regretted ever signing up to become a reaper.
'10,000 ants!? Are you joking?'
'Where the hell am I going to find 100,000 dead larvae! What are these 10k mosquitoes!' Alan cursed in his mind at the ridiculous daily quota.
What made it worse was that the rewards seemed so bad! 'All that work for 10 experience points! This is a scam, right!?'
"Um...boss...this is a joke, right?" Alan carefully asked, hoping this would be another one of his 'jokes' like previously...but something in his non-existent gut told him otherwise.
The man smiled "The life of a reaper is difficult. I wish you luck, bye." He answered care freely and vanished in a puff of smoke before Alan could reach out his hand and stop him.
…
"Oh! This will be where your hub is, so you come here to report anything or ask for something that the system can't do." A voice rang in Alan's head, snapping him out of the daze he was in.
"Oh! Also, you start tomorrow! It's 11pm right now, so you have an hour." The voice once again rang in Alan's head, making him feel depressed.
'Only an hour...before I start this job, huh…' Alan lamented as he wobbled around the area.
The area itself was a large cemetery full of gravestones around all sides for who knows how long.
No matter how far Alan travelled, he always ended up by the desk and chair where the god of Death sat.
Looking over at his quota again, Alan sighed and thought of a strategy.
'I should head to a jungle for the mosquitoes and larvae… and the ants... well there are ants everywhere, so I'm sure I can find them...but 10,000?' Alan sighed once again at these impossible looking tasks.
But, he slapped his ice cold skull to ignite his spirits 'Come on Alan! Nothing will be easy in life..or is it more like undead life? Point is, if you were successful in your old job, you can do this!'
With his spirits revitalised, Alan did some stretches to properly get used to this body.
He had an hour to prevent himself from wobbling and tripping on his own foot every time he took a step.
At first, he was holding the gravestone while walking, trying to get used to the weight distribution.
After about 10 minutes, he outstretched his arms as he walked like he was on a tightrope, trying to balance himself from his weight.
'Okay, I'm getting the han-AH!' However, he still fell face flat on the ground.
'okay...I don't get it..' He thought but stood up again.
He spent another 20 minutes trying to walk properly and was getting better and more comfortable in his new body.
Eventually, he could walk around the cemetery with minor issues in his balance, but he wasn't able to run, no matter how hard he tried to.
Every time he tried to run, he would immediately collapse and hurt himself, which after about five tries, he gave up on the idea of running.
'Maybe one day I'll be able to run…' Alan looked up again after sighing, seeing the black vortex of a cloud hovering above him.
'Does that thing follow me?' He walked while looking up at the dark clouded vortex.
And sure enough, he noticed that the vortex was indeed following him 'Hm...what a strange world I'm in..'
He stopped messing around and waited for midnight, as he guessed they would release him from this area once he officially started his job.
11:50pm…
11:55pm…
Midnight was soon, and thus his life as a Grim Reaper would begin soon.
'Alice... I hope you're well. My sudden death would probably shock everyone... but I hope you will have no more problems.'
Alan thought about his wife, as he was probably not going to see her for a while until his boss allowed it.
'I need to become a human first and then I will come find you, Alice. I can't be relaxed and mindless this time.. I must chase these promotions and fight for them.'
As Alan was building his resolution, a crimson light sparked in his eyes.
Midnight finally approached, and Alan had officially started his job.
