!This chapter is my flashback to when I was younger!
"Sister, what book were you reading just now?!" I came to Lydia who just finished reading a book. We were good siblings and bestfriend. We used to play, study and do a lot of things together.
"This is a book about history. You want to try reading it?" She showed me the book she was holding.
I smiled brightly, full of happiness. "Yes." I nodded.
Sister Lydia smiled back at me. "Here. You can read it." She gave me the book, then patted my head.
Since we were young, we really liked to read and learn. Our teacher was really pleased to teach us, but also confused. We were only eight and six years old kids, but we mastered something that was even a hard thing for a twelve years old kid. People said that our father was very lucky to have us.
At first, I thought this talent of mine was something good and made me special. My father was so proud of sister Lydia and I. Unlike our younger siblings and cousins, we could get anything we wanted easily. That was the reward for our talent.
When I was seven years old, everything started to change. That was when I accidentally saw how my father treated the other children in this family. Before, I thought that I got a special treat from my father while the other treated normally.
But in reality, this family had a hierarchy system for the children. The highest was the children who had a great talent like sister Lydia and me, while the lowest was children who had no talent at all. The higher the child's rank the better the quality of their living area. Like me, I lived in the main building.
Those kids who had no talent at all to help this family were poorly treated. They lived in the west building, the one that was farthest from anywhere in the mansion. They worked in the family as a low rank servant, or even sold as a slave.
That time, I was lost when I played, and unknowingly, I walked inside the west building. The building felt so cold, unlike the main building where I used to live.
"You useless kid! You even cannot finish this work?" I heard my father's voice and a hissing and pleading voice. What happened here?
I kept walking to the source of the voices. In one of the rooms, I saw my father kicking a child who was kneeling in front of him. I didn't know what exactly happened, but I could tell that my father was terribly angry at the kid.
"You don't have any use at all. Be prepared, I will sell you. At least I can get some money." Said my father as he left.
I, who was freezing due to the fear, in front of the door, was about to get caught. But a hand grabbed me so my father didn't notice my presence . "I'm sorry to drag you that way Olivia." The boy who dragged me bowed. "I was thinking that if your father found you, then you would be in danger." He explained.
"Uhhh, thank you brother Raphael." I answered the boy. He was Raphael, one of my older cousins.
Brother Raphael smiled. "No need to thank me, lady Olivia. Now, you better hurry and return to your room. This place is dangerous for you. A proud daughter of the Whitley family cannot be in a place like this." He guided me to the gate of the west building.
"Next time, don't come to this place, understand?" He said when we arrived at the gate.
"Brother Raphael, what are you doing here? Do you want me to help you? Brother helped me before." I asked innocently.
Brother Raphael bent his body toward me. "This is the new place for me to live, so that's why I am here. If you want to help me, don't tell anyone that we meet here. Also, study hard. In the future, release me and the children from here. Now, go back to the main building."
I nodded and ran to the main building. There, I ran to my mother's room, trying to get her help. Maybe she could help kids at the west building, so at least they could live a normal life. "Mother!" I came with tears in my eyes. "I, hiks… I saw my father kicking brothers… Why did father do that?"
"Doesn't that mean a good thing for you?" My mother answered me coldly. She was sitting leisurely with a catalogue book in her hands.
"Mo-mother, what do you mean? Mother, please help those in the west building. At least give them a proper life." I begged her.
My mother put back the book catalogue and sent her maids away. "Did you play at the west building?! What did they do to you? They asked you for help?!" She was angry.
"No, I just want to help them." I shaked my head as I cried.
"Olivia, listen. Those children who live in the west building deserve what they get. They are your father's useless children, so they are treated that way." My mother said those words firmly as she squeezed my arms tightly.
"You have to study hard so you can get whatever you want. Money, position, luxury, anything you want. You should be the best child ever and beat all your siblings including that girl, Lydia. Do you understand?!" She yelled.
I, who was in fear, could only nod. "Yes mother."
"Good. Now, go back to your room and study!"
I bowed to my mother then left her. Along my way back to my room, I lost in my thoughts. My father only valued the children in this house by their talent and what they could do. While my mother, she didn't care about anything, only cared about a luxurious life.
Then, if I wanted to help those children, I had to study hard and get a high position. When I had enough power then I would release them secretly so no one would notice.
That was a great idea.
