Chapter 45: You saved a hit man

Something a little like relief crept in. 'I'm me, William.' She climbed onto her knees. 'I've never been anything other than honest about my feelings for you.' She closed the gap between them. 'I'm here, aren't I? I'm wearing this, aren't I?' She held up her hand. The square brilliant cut diamond glinted.

He wanted to believe her, she could see.

'You've got to trust me. I've shown that I trust you.'

He stared, and as he didn't answer the magnitude of what he might be concealing began to make an impression upon her. She went cold, goose bumps in waves rose on her skin and involuntarily she shivered.

'Get dressed,' he said, and went.

She didn't move, for a time couldn't. When she did it was not to waste time on inessentials. Throwing on her clothes she went looking for him. Where was he?

He was in the kitchen making coffee.

She burst through the door and halted. He put a cup on the table closest to her, making no remark about her swiftness or her appearance.
