Chapter 56: Sidestepping being shot

He didn't bother tidying; the ransacked office would be his calling card in case the first had been missed. The need for secrecy was over. He shouldered the bag and made his way out.

'You've had a more profitable night tonight by the look of it.'

Donaldson and Halley blocked his way.

'I hardly recognised you. Very becoming. I'll take the bag.'

David denied him the opportunity. Even as Donaldson spoke reflexes had him behind a stack of cane furniture and tipping it on them as he sped for the rear entrance.

'Cut him off,' he heard Donaldson hiss and changed his route as he saw Halley flit past. He'd go for the front. It all went quiet. Treading soundlessly on the balls of his feet, hearing ranging close and distant, holding his breath so it wouldn't interfere, David revolved slowly around the aisles.
