Chapter 64: No-one would miss her

Noel's arms were tired and her neck stiff from holding her mouth above water. At first she had tried breaststroking normally, submerging with every pull, but her eyes had begun to sting, her hair clung to her face, and the forced breathing took its toll. She estimated she had been swimming for perhaps three hours but it could have been much less. An hour in good conditions was no more than a Sunday stroll for her. Admittedly the present circumstances were more trying. As yet there was no lightening of the sky. What time was it? How much closer to shore was she? Was anyone thinking of her? Who, except her murderers? No-one else would know she was missing. No-one would give her a second thought until she failed to attend the party. Then they would wonder. And eventually start looking. Too late.
