Chapter 28: Dinner moves into the bedroom

He sighed. 'I've said I believe him.' He was rubbing his fingers clean of grease with a napkin.

'It won't hurt either of us to see what happens.'

He refilled her glass with the last of the wine and went to open another. 'No more for me,' Elisabeth said. He was less stringent with himself and poured to within a hair's breadth of the rim. Making himself comfortable in the corner of the settee, arm stretched along the back, a wall lamp helping the fading daylight along he looked at her and said, 'Tell me about the cases you've had against this Richards. What's he like?'

He was interested to see her cheeks tinge pink. He watched her cross her legs away from him and hold her glass on the wide studded armrest. All in all a very defensive position.
