Chapter 32: Was he being played?

Elisabeth watched as he disappeared into the grey blocked and depressing building and then opened the passenger side door to sit in the car. He was a matter of minutes and she watched him pause to adjust re-entering the sunlight. He went to sit beside her. 'They're still with him.' She nodded. He put the keys in the ignition to roll down the window.

'They'll have a few things they'll want to ask. Would you drop us at the hotel? I can meet you later.'

'I'll come with you.'

'I'd prefer not.'

Weariness overtook him. 'Ray Montgomery's a witness.'

She turned to face him. 'Who's going to know how much I'm seeing of them unless someone tells. Are you going to?'

'Give me a reason not to.'

She chewed her lip. 'Because I'm asking.' She watched him wrestling with it and when he said nothing sat back in her seat. 'If you like we could eat at the Park Royal.' He hadn't taken his eyes off her.
