Chapter 35: The accused meets his parents

She wore moccasins and jeans and walked quickly around to the hotel to arrive within fifteen minutes, a little less dreadful than when setting out. The Montgomery's were not downstairs but had a table booked so she sat and waited. It was in the same area, by the rear windows, that she had sat with Robert the night before. Rob, his brother called him. Murphy or Murph to everyone else. Only she, to her knowledge, called him Robert. Perhaps because she was so particular with her own.

She sat with her thoughts until they arrived. Both kissed her cheek and Ray winked and won a smile. They ate to sustain themselves only and Russell's father asked, 'What is it you want us to do today?'

Elisabeth said, 'It depends on Russell. If he wants you to stay, then stay.' She clasped her wrists on the table and leaned her chest against them. 'I'm going to take him through the trial so he knows what to expect. I'll explain the procedures and what I want him to do.'
