Chapter 57: I was afraid

She was agitated, that was plain, but for whatever reason she had said it she was not now going to retract. Firmly she said, 'I heard them. I forgot before.'

Sensibly, Thierry left it at that. 'After the car had gone what did you do?'

'I went to my husband.'

'To do what?'

'To help him.'

'And could you help him?'

'No.' They had to wait while she blew her nose and wiped her eyes. 'He was dead.'

'How did you come to that conclusion, Mrs Stavros?' Immediately he rephrased it. 'How did you know he was dead?'

'He was not breathing.'

'Were you upset at this time?'

Her body convulsed. 'Yes. And very afraid.'

'Why were you afraid?'

'I didn't know what to do. I thought he might come back.'

'Why did you think the accused would return?'

'I thought he might decide he should have killed me too.'

'So what did you do? Did you call for help?'

She nodded with the cotton balled on her top lip. 'I telephoned my son Christopher.'

'And he said he would come immediately?'

'Yes.'
