*National High*
Ben walked through the school, but unlike before no one noticed him. Or more like, he made sure of that. His stature, his aura, everything about him had changed, and these changes are enough to send alarms that something happened, hence he used a 'notice-me-not' charm, with a slight variation, that if anybody is looking for him without any intention of harm, they can notice him.
And they did, as Ben felt her aura when she had entered the school. And Ben wasn't sure what to feel about that. Kara Danvers, or Kara Zor El, a Kryptonian, Superman's cousin. She was his friend was quite a while, and had the same help-all aura as her brother. Ben liked her energetic nature, neither did he care about anyone being alien, considering he now himself could be considered one.
But his magical senses were a whole other story. When he felt her walk into his mana field, his way of practicing a form of spider-sense or Observation Haki, he was scared. In fact, all his senses were asking him to flee. That's how much solar energy she had stored in her. Even though she wasn't as strong as her brother, she showed what being a Kryptonian was all about.
Ben took about 5 seconds to calm down from this shock. He then observed closely, and then felt as strong as she was, so was she fragile. To magic at least. Her skin was absorbing all the energy in her surroundings without any blocks, making her resistance to magic negligible. Ben wondered why the hell Darkside kept trading blows with Superman when even he, who was a novice, could feel Kryptonian's venerability to magic.
After that, was her sister, who was supposed to be recruited by DEO later... then WHY THE HECK IS SHE WEARING AN HIDDEN CAMERA?
Ben wouldn't have noticed if Friday didn't display it on his glasses. Ben wanted to do a quick mind read, but refrained, especially because he wasn't sure if Kara could sense or see mind waves. He knew Kryptonians were somewhat immune to mind reading, and he didn't want to find out why, without making sure his mind was a quantum computer as well. As for his power absorption, he already has a lot on his plate, so he refrained for now. And he didn't want to get her powers until he was sure his magic resistance wouldn't turn paper-thin as well.
"Ben, you're back! I knew you were sick, yet you kept lying!" She exclaimed happily, then glared at him. Ben swore he saw Barbra for a second overlapping Kara, He ignored the weird thought and said, "Fine, fine, I had insomnia for a while, but it's fine now." He said with a wry smile. Kara nodded her head twice with a smile hearing this, but stopped after the second, making a confused face.
Ben felt something was wrong, and so did Alex, but the bell rang distracting them from Kara. They made their way to class where he noticed a group taking a selfie. 'Perfect', Ben thought.
"If they are gonna continue this, the school may start placing cameras in classes to keep used of mobiles under control," Ben said talking out loud. He noticed Kara was distracted and used a small mind read of Alex. He was sure, Hank Henshaw, or Martian Manhunter, would be there, so he didn't want to leave any traces since he was still a rookie. That's why he bought out the topic of cameras. Making one think of something makes all their recent thoughts about the subject come out in front, and so happened with Alex.
And it was worrying. She just wore a camera because DEO noticed some sort of energy spike last week in National City, and wanted to make sure nothing happened to Kara. And the energy spike was probably him, as his lab, while being in the basement, can't hide specific energy signatures, like his when he woke up. Ben decided he needed to study some sort of runes to isolate energy and other things he may do in the future.
During the entire class, Ben was hearing subconsciously, while reading his magic book. He obviously can't take it out, after all, he wasn't sure about any magician, but he found another way. While looking at the item box's screen, using the eye of observation made him somehow read the page he was on before, and search as well, and he decided to abuse it in school. And his brain subconsciously listened to the teacher and took notes, so no one felt anything weird.
All except Kara that is. And even by knowing everything about Kryptonian physiology, he forgot about their super hearing. And Kara had used that to know he was lying by hearing his heartbeat. And what Kara had heard weirded her out. She didn't even know what to think of it. Even after having a quantum computer-like brain, she didn't know what to say.
'A normal human heart rate is 72 bpm,... then why. the. HELL is he 18?? And why do I hear two hearts????' Kara was extremely weirded out by this. She wanted to use X-ray vision on him but refrained. She didn't want Alex to know something was wrong. Normally she never hides anything from her, but she knew for a while Alex had started keeping secrets, so treating it like a competition, she started doing it as well. And she wanted to confirm if her best friend didn't get replaced by some ALIEN. And if anything happened to him, it would have hell to pay.
Ben felt a chill up his spine, so stopped reading his book and started paying attention around, he wasn't going to make a mistake to ignore his instincts. And the sudden vigilance rose Kara's suspicion even more. Especially when she finally noticed when watching closely how much her friend has changed. He was, taller and broader, and instead of his passive and sometimes aggressive... no, extremely aggressive aura when provoked too much, he now had this mysterious vibe, and for some reason, she felt like he was cautious, against everyone. None of his easygoing actions were on display, none at all. She decided to make sure to get to the bottom of it.
*4 months later*
Ben was having a great week. Moving to national city was the best idea, away from the gloomy Gotham. He loved researching his powers and magic while making some websites and programs for minor cash. The week after awakening his powers was... awkward. That's all he calls it, as it was partially his mistake. He didn't count on Kara's superhearing and disguise his heartbeat, and neither could he change it drastically, as sometimes felt Kara was about to jump on him if anything wrong happens. He once felt her X-raying through the washrooms, so he decided to clear the doubts somewhat. He really didn't want anyone to know about his powers, but that was the only safe play, as he felt sooner or later Kara will punch him for answers.
So he decided to draw once in the cafeteria while they were eating and make the pencil break. No one noticed, Except Kara, as he wanted. He looked around, to make him look like he was noticing anyone watching him, and Kara acted like she was looking at the phone, waiting for something to happen, while using X-ray vision to see him completely through the table. She didn't want to miss him pulling out a tentacle when she wasn't looking as she believed an alien parasite in him now.
But what she saw was shocking in his own right. Ben placed his finger on the exposed and, and his fingers turned into lead. He used it to create an extra tip and fuse it to the pencil. Then his finger returned to normal. Kara was shocked to see this. Adding to the surprise factor, she heard ben mutter to himself." Damn, I'm a walking goldmine, I shouldn't use it carelessly. What the heck am I doing?" She finally realized what happened to Ben, whatever happened in the week, activated his metagene. She was even more worried about what she heard after seeing his powers. He was indeed a walking goldmine... no, even more valuable. If he could somehow copy and produce more of the kryptonite or other precious metals, Luthor would do anything to get his hands on him.
This solidified her thinking to keep it a secret even more, and the target moved away from his back.
Another thing that happened was Dick moving to National City. He is an investigator in NCPD. Ben had a chat with him at a juice shop when he met him, and he honestly had mixed views about him being in the city, which he told Dick as well. Ben was glad he saw him after a while, and not sure what to feel knowing a bird always looks for prey.
Dick laughed knowing how much he wanted to stay away from these things and assured him he won't start soon as it would draw suspicion. He met him a couple more times. He decided to give him a heads up about there being a few meta kids being here, so be careful. Kara, for all her genius, is pretty careless, after all. He won't be surprised if Dick finds out about her soon.
But as good as the previous days were, this one was not. Ben was rushing out of the elevator looking for a cabin in the hospital. Gotham hospital, that is. Ben finally reached the cabin and stood outside. He stood there, unsure what to do, but pushed the door quietly. And what he saw inside made all the panic in his brain turn ice cold.
James Gordon was sitting on a wheelchair, silently. And on the bed lay the redhead, whose hand he was holding. Ben barely kept his emotions in check. Losing them would let his mana let wild, and he didn't want that. He felt hurt, seeing his cheerful, yet headstrong friend, lying on the bed, blankly staring at the wall with eyes that almost looked lifeless. Though the door opened silently, both patients, though in very bad condition, were extremely careful of their surroundings. And the noticed it.
Ben walked in saying nothing. He sat down beside the bed and held Barbra's other hand gently. Barbra didn't say anything and held on tight. But she couldn't hold it in, she couldn't hold back her tears anymore, no matter how hard she tried. Gordon was panicked but didn't let go of her hand. He suffered mental trauma as well but somehow held on.
Ben stood up and kept a hand on her head, giving off waves of calmness, and said, "...Don't hold it in... we're all here for you."
That was the final push. She only silently wailed when Batman was there, she kept her silence with her father as well, trying to act strong despite what happened, and Ben broke the dam. Barbra cried. She cried holding his hand tightly. Ben kept his hand on her head, making sure she let it all out. After a while, she cried herself to sleep. Ben kept holding her hand, then looked towards Gordon and asked, "How?"
Ben knew. But he still had to know. Somehow. Something. And he did. Robin went missing, and Batman and Batgirl went to find him. After her search, a tired Barbra returned home to spend time with his father. James had figured out a while back what his little girl did, and as much as he hated it, he entrusted her safety to Batman.
Ben had no idea why Gordon was telling him everything. HE had met at most 4 times. 2 times when he came to pick Barbra up, and 2 times when he was invited by her to her birthday party. Yet he told him everything. How the bell rang, she went to get the gate, coming to face with HIM. And when Gordon heard the shot, he ran, but couldn't do anything. He was bound by the guards and taken away, cursing the smiling man, but he didn't pay attention to him. BECAUSE THAT BASTARD WAS BUSY TAKING PICTURES OF A BLEEDING 16-YEAR-OLD. The same pictures HE used to in his plan to drive Gordon insane.
Gordon was saved, but he questioned. At what cost? Batman was late, and the Joker had gotten away. Again. As much as Gordon wanted to blame him, he had no one to blame but himself. And he hated it.
He remained in the hospital, not even able to visit her daughter until he begged. Only to find out she can't walk for the rest of her life. Gordon silently shed tears. He couldn't look up because he failed to protect his daughter. He felt he had failed as a father. He didn't blame Batman because he was busy finding his son as well.
After a while, the nurse came to take Gordon away, who Ben assured he would be with her no matter what. Ben watched him exit and placed runes all around the ward. The window was strong enough to stop a sniper easily, The floor was enchanted to freeze on detecting any hostility. He kept his search range open to make sure he knows who came near.
But one question remained in his heart, and for all the future knowledge he had, he prayed for it to not be true.' Please... be safe Jason. I'm barely holding back from what happened to Babs. Please.'
