"Paradise is boring." Emma lay across the bed and grumbled aloud to Rafe, who'd returned more gloomy and annoyed than ever.
"Perhaps you should try helping me to find an exit then."
"You're not looking for the exit. You want to get to the castle."
"As should you. I have a feeling that is where we will be able to find the controls for this place. Once we can call the shots, then we can think of leaving. We're never leaving."
Emma wondered if Rafe knew of the other voice that spoke for him - and through him - sometimes. He certainly acted oblivious to it, but it happened more and more lately. It frightened her. The man she loved had changed so much. At times, the way he looked at her, as if she were an interesting object and not a person, gave her a chill.
"Is escape the only reason you want to go to the castle?"
"Of course, it is. No, it's not."
