Fourteen year old Tyler and his little sister Emma meet their neighbors foster son, fourteen year old Calem at their beach house in Hampton Bays, New York. After discovering unusual fishermen and nearly drowning, Emma discovers that there is something in the water that helps save her. After sneaking out to the beach at night, the kids discover a mermaid named Acrilla who helped Emma. She takes them to her underwater home where she, and the other mermaids live. Unfortunately, they are in danger from humans who take sea mammals and sell them for money. It is up to Tyler, Emma, and Calem to help the mermaids protect the wild ocean animals while keeping it a secret from their parents.

Tyler walks back up the stairs and presses his ear against the door. He only hears the sounds of the water, and the fishermen talking amongst each other.


“What else do you hear?” Calem asks Tyler.


“Nothing, just the same noises and men talking,” he says. “It looks like no one else is on the boat, besides them and us.”


“You mean, we’re going to be stuck here, forever?” Emma asks.


“No, we just need to take some steps in finding a way to get out, but it will be harder than the last time,” Tyler says. He and Calem look around for any of the items they found last time they were in this room. 


Calem searches under the stairs, and behind some boxes before finding an old fishing rod. “What are we supposed to do with this?” he asks. Tyler takes a look at it. Analyzing the fishing rod, he notices how hard and thick the end piece is.
