14. rescue

The ground trembled and suddenly a rock protruded out of the earth and was fast approaching Gareth's left side. With a nimble side step he dodged being skewered only for the newly arisen pillar to collide with another rock pillar. Right afterwards they both crumbled and Gareth was right in the danger zone for the rocks falling above.

Gareth kept manoeuvring himself like the Adobe flash game avalanche, he kept jumping onto different rocks to stop himself from being trapped.

With a final leap he managed to get out of the falling rocks however he couldn't relax his guard and continued running. Some of the rock pillars were low enough he could jump over them others he had to go around even if he passed one rock pillar he couldn't ignore it as it could crumble the next minute.

He had been running half a day and realised the closer he got to the center of the field the more rock protrusions there were as well as more of them being produced. The small dusty creature was 4/5th the way into the center the go's between the rocks was barely enough for him to squeeze through and going further the gaps could be as small as a needle. In addition the ground was constantly moving so there would be more and more collisions thus meaning greater frequency of falling rocks.

Gareth only had to dodge falling rocks every 5 minutes in the beginning, with the appearance of new rock pillars being 6 minutes. Now however the collisions were coming at 30 seconds with new protrusions coming every 20 seconds and the intervals were still getting smaller.

Gareth even with Bret vigilance was still nearly skewered, he had just went around a large falling Boulder when a rock pillar suddenly appeared aiming to puncture his chest. He didn't have time to dodge before it hit him and a resounding crunch as it pierced through his skin and bone however Gareth managed to hold onto the rock pillar at the last second so it was just nudging his heart. He was pushed off the ground and when he turned round he saw another pillar behind him.

Gritting his teeth he slowly pulled out the pillar embedded in his chest and fell down to the ground. However danger wasn't over yet as he suddenly rolled and got to his feet the position he was in earlier just had another protrusion come out of the ground and he had just rolled away just in time. Now however he had to dodge the falling rocks as the pillars had collided.

Gareth continued making his way forward as fast as he can while maintaining vigilance towards his surroundings. He had more than a few near misses with one of them a Boulder came inches away from crushing him.

Gareth could see the blotchy dirty creature a few meters ahead of him he had to jump through a hole made from the Criss crossing of numeral pillars. With a jump and roll he had gotten though and picked up the weak creature using his only good arm. However the opening he went through was now blocked and he was trapped surrounded by stone spikes.

This did not deter Gareth as he began wall jumping without using his hands, the ground seemed to have predicted this and when he was 3/4th up the pillars crumbled and now he was jumping in mid air, he couldn't fall as there were numerous spikes below as such he jumped from rock to rock staying aloft albeit barely. After a dozen minutes in the air he found a suitable patch of ground to land on and after jumping a few more times he landed.

He was finally out of the most dangerous area and now the time interval began to gradually increase. Catching a few seconds of rest he then continued to the other side still holding the unknown creature in his arms.

Boom! A large cloud of dust erupted and soon a figure staggered out of the dust limping for a few more meters before collapsing in his hand a dirty grey fuzzy bundle was slowly breathing in and out. Gareth had made it out however he had to sacrifice both of this rifles, half his ammunition and the bandits food supplies. From behind he could have faintly make put an earthly roar coming from the depths of the stone forest.
