Chapter 27: Olde Tymes, Part 3

Chicago 1871

Katya started to stir and regain consciousness just as a beat cop was making his way toward them.

"Saint's preserve us!" he began with a thick, stereotypical Irish accent. "So, what have we here? Did the lady have a wee bit too much to drink tonight?"

"No, she ah-" Cyrus started, but Katya cut him off.

Imitating the officer's accent, she said, "Heavens no, good sir. My beau here just proposed a marriage engagement and the news literally knocked me off me feet. I swooned."

"Are ye all right now, miss?" asked the officer. "Can I be of any assistance?"

"Officer..." Katya paused to look for a name badge.

"O'Malley, the name's O'Malley, at your service, miss."

"Thank you so kindly, Officer O'Malley," she continued. "I would be ever so obliged if you would hail us a carriage. We're trying to get to a good hotel for the night."
