Chapter 17

She was going to die here, she realized with a sense of defeatism. No… even worse than death, she was going to be sold off like a farm animal.

Suddenly, a crystal-clear thought came to her. She wasn’t laying on the ground out of fear anymore. She was lying in a bed of depression, feeling sorry for herself instead of doing something about it. She needed to pull herself out of her head and figure out how to get away from these people.

Preferably alive.

Shaking off the feeling of helplessness, she pushed herself up and managed to crawl back, slumping against the tree. In the darkness that had wrapped itself around this world, she couldn’t make out anything beyond being surrounded by trees. And unfortunately, all trees looked alike.
