His broad smile lit up the night even brighter than the bonfire someone had started in the middle of town. She groaned inwardly, fearing she would disappoint him more than anyone else when this was all over. She forced a happy smile as she put her hand on his arm once more and allowed him to move her towards the crowd that seemed to grow even bigger as they talked.

One moment, they were on the edge of the crowd, and the next, they were engulfed. People seemed to talk all at once, introducing themselves, thanking her for her help, offering other assistance. She was so overwhelmed by their immediate acceptance that she couldn't do anything except smile and thank them for their support and kind words.

“Hello, milady,” said one joyful woman. “I’m Jenese. I’m one of the Elders.”

Neivayka looked her up and down with open skepticism. “An Elder?”
