Chapter 33

All I could do was stare at him. This child in front of me had never said anything that intuitive in his life nor had ever been more serious. He had abruptly become so discerning that it was frightening me. I was at a loss what to do beyond nodding my head. He gave me a huge smile and a self-satisfying nod then went over to the far corner and messed with a few pieces of papers on the table. It looked as if someone had brought a few crayons and pieces of papers for him. He riveted me especially when he started singing his ABC’s and then counting. It was something he had never done so willingly.

Julia came rushing in, dragging my attention away from him.

“Marcus said something was wrong, and I needed to come immediately. What’s wrong?” she asked deeply concerned.

“It’s this, damn- I mean dang leg,” I retracted my words when Johnny’s head came up and gave me a chastising glare.
