Chapter 71

In the dancing orange and yellow flames of the roaring campfire I found myself seeing vision after vision of the bloody sights that had been burned into my retinas. No matter how many times I tried to force my mind away from all the moments haunting me they still played like a sick movie over and over again. It hadn’t been the first Eater I had killed, nor would it be the last. I was repulsed the moment the truth crossed through my frayed mind. But even those justifications didn’t help the raw churning guilt that was eating away at me.

We had decided to stop for the night in a circle of rocks. The large boulders weren’t enough to hide the fire that we had started, but the Eaters never seem to notice the fires. As long as we weren’t in their sight, they never bothered us. It was the flesh and blood… and soul… people that were going to be the issue. But the land around us was flat and it was easy to see all the way to the small hills that surrounded this valley.
