Testing the Magic

Niah tightened her grip on my shirt. It was not my first time seeing an awful sight of mounds of skeletons, but I guess it’s her first.

“Do you know this place?” I asked.

I gulped as sweat soaked the back of my shirt, though the humidity was freezing. The place felt like poltergeists haunted it for a very long time.

“I-I do not know…”

Why is there a basement under the library? Who else knew this place? Who are these corpses?

I looked intently at Niah as I held her cheeks. Her eyes were on the verge of crying.

“Listen. Pull yourself together. We have to get out of here as soon as possible before anyone notices our disappearance, especially Luxferre and Vad,” I said.

I hugged her and caressed her back.

“Calm down. I’m here, you’re not alone. Remember that you are the chosen one. You need to be strong for your people.”

Her heart throbbed loudly against mine. Before I knew it, she fell asleep in my arms.
