Patrick Sawyer sat in his car with the engine running waiting for Jane Clayton to drop his daughter Gabi off after a two-day sleepover with her best friend, Marti, and he couldn't wait for her to arrive. Taking another slug of beer, he could feel the excitement surging through his body, knowing he had finally achieved the long-anticipated desire he lived for, and now he could enjoy the fruits of his labor. Patrick knew Gabi would be upset when she heard her mother had already left on vacation with her friends without saying goodbye first. He hoped the special afternoon he'd planned would help her deal with the disappointment.
Finishing the last of his beer, he flung the empty bottle out the window into a neighbor's yard knowing they weren't home, then pushed the window control button to shut out the heat. The window slid into place with a smooth finish, silencing any outside noise. Sweat ran down his neck. He adjusted the temperature and turned the fan higher.
