Samuel Davis stood over the body and stared at the victim. "She's just as beautiful in death as she was alive," Samuel Davis, the medical examiner, said when he stood in front of Maureen's body. "Such a tragedy."
Leaning over the edge of the tub, he pulled the plug to drain the water. The gurgling sound made Jessie cringe. She knew from this day forward, that sound would forever remind her of Maureen.
A muscle flickered in his jaw. He'd dated Maureen during their single years. "Congratulations on your promotion."
"Thank you." Jessie thought it was nice that Samuel acknowledged it, but the impact of that reality hadn't caught up with her yet.
"I saw her yesterday," he said while he examined the body, "at another crime scene."
"Did she seem okay to you?"
"She seemed fine . . . I mean, she was upset the victim's ten-year-old daughter killed her mother, but other than that, she was her usual pleasant self."
