Jessie and her father talked for hours, longer than she ever remembered talking with anyone.
"On the day you graduated from the Academy, I was so proud of you. I so wanted to reach out to you, but I feared rejection and I didn't want to ruin your special day. You were so excited."
"You were there?"
"I was, and I've followed your career all the way. I couldn't be prouder that you've chosen law enforcement . . . and that you're so damn good at it."
"I love it."
"I always did too." Joe said.
"Are you working the job?"
"No, I retired after I finished a five-year undercover assignment." His eyebrows squished together. "I am curious about why you didn't tell Zach I was in law enforcement."
"It was my immaturity and anger that stopped me from admitting I'd followed in your footsteps because it was like holding a sign up that I wanted to be just like you." The hurt look on his face made Jessie regret her comment. "I'm sorry."
