The night grew cold as the detective left his office. His case kept getting bigger with each day. The other detectives, decided they didn't want this case for fear of their own death. Detective Smith was different however, he was single and the last of his family in the city. Unlike the other detectives when they heard that several cops on the case were found dead, he continued pursuing them. He didn't fear his death, and he was highly observant with his surroundings. This case had become his life, one that even he wouldn't get to complete soon. He knew this, but still kept searching for answers. Only Sebastian would help him.
-a few months ago-
Smith: "Sebastian, your working this case with me right?"
Sebastian: "This is my last one, with a daredevil like you. You remember what they did to those officers. What makes you think we won't end up the same way?"
Smith: "We might, but that doesn't change anything for me. You have a family, so i can understand your concern. You don't have to do this case with me. If i die, it won't matter. It's different for you, your family will mourn you."
Sebastian: "Your a great detective, we would all mourn you. And as for your offer, I am going to continue this case, but this is the last case i will do. You could say I'm retiring after this is over."
Smith: "Your little girl is going into college now right? You should spend more time with her before things start getting messy around here. Take the night off, go be with your family. Tell me tomorrow if you still want to help me with this case."
Sebastian nodded and got up from his chair. He grabbed his hat and his coat.
Sebastian: "Smith, no matter what happens. You have to finish this case, too many have died already. The higher ups don't seem concerned with this. Despite 3 of them already dead. Be careful with what you uncover."
He opened the door and left Smith to himself. The office was quiet, the empty desks of his fallen friends surrounding him. He didn't have much left and this was a brutal case to work. He sat there for a few minutes thinking to himself about how many have died in this case. Years have gone by and they still are no closer to finding them.
Smith: "This case might be the death of me, but Sebastian is right. We need to be careful with them."
He grabbed his coat and looked around the empty room. He missed how full of life it once was, his colleagues were always making jokes and lightening the mood. Now they were replaced with empty desks and eerie silence. He let out a small sigh and left for the night.
