What other people say

"Annual hunting competition?" Lin Biao looked up from his plate with a confused expression. "It came again? So soon?" He questioned.

"You should probably pay more attention to reality than your paintings. A year already passed and you didn't even notice? People think that the second young master of the Lin family is just a lazy bum. I don't believe that you took a whole year to just complete one single painting." Lin Zexus was reminded that he had to scold his eldest son for spending most of his time with his paintings rather than having general knowledge about recent things. He heard some people talking not long ago about his son just being a lazy bum.

What he said didn't look like it was a major issue or his words were too harsh. But it implied that he agreed with what others think about his son.

"Dad, I am on my journey to create a masterpiece. Don't you think you should be more supportive of your talented son rather than scolding him? Does knowing a hunting competition is going to make me the best man in this world? What does it matter if I know or I don't?" Lin Biao suddenly became passionate and started questioning his father. His expression didn't look serious as not to spoil the dinner time.

But when Lin Huiying looked at his eyes, she felt that he was serious in his heart. Maybe he was a little sad about his father questioning him. She knew this feeling very well.

Her parents always supported her to pursue whatever major she wanted. But when she told them that she wanted to become a surgeon, his father, and big brother thought that it was a very tiring and long journey and maybe she would be better off with some easy major.

Partly because her dad wanted to keep her next to him and not send her abroad for further studies away from him. And partly because he felt that she was not suitable for a journey that required complete dedication and passion.

She didn't much blame him, she couldn't. Because when she took that decision she was going through depression and anxiety. They didn't know her condition, but he could predict that whatever phase his daughter was going through was not the right one to take such a big decision in her life.

She was resilient. She convinced him and he agreed. But there was this little part of her inside who wanted to be worthy in her family's eyes.

She kind of understands what Lin Biao must be feeling like. He couldn't outright tell his parents that they make him feel like a fool who was just passing his time drawing rather than being an intelligent gentleman who "the society" thinks is worthy.

"Well uncle, if you ask me then I stand by Big brother Biao's side. I am extremely proud of him for pursuing what he is passionate about. What makes HIM happy. His work is going to fill a huge part of his life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what he believes is great work." Lin Huiying spoke with a calm and easy expression while looking directly into her uncle's eyes.

"And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. Your life isn't yours if you always care what others think." She turned her head with a firm and assuring expression to looked at Lin Biao who was a little surprised and moved by her words. Not just him, even others had stopped their moments at this point and were looking at her.

She again turned to her uncle and said, "People will question all the good things they hear about someone, but believe the bad without a second thought."

Here she used someone else's quote, but she firmly believed in it. Not as if the writer is gonna chase her in this era for using his words as her own.

She continued, "Uncle what does it matter about what others have to say? One day they will sing praises and another day curses. But for big brother Biao we are his family. If we don't appreciate and support his passion while trying to dump our ideas of what is great and what is mediocre then where will he get the freedom to be himself?"

"I am sure that uncle has the best interest for big brother Biao, but sometimes what we consider the best may not always be the best for the other. We should think from his perspective rather than our own. What you said was not harsh, but I hope you would wonder about one thing."
