Something to hold onto

"Kids, we have a trip to make. Wake up."

Mrs. Arnolds in a flowery dress, along with mom in shorts and a tank made me question the purpose of that day.

"Are we heading to the Maldives?"

"You wish. The journey is going to be hot, that's it. Now hurry up!"

We spent two hours in a car singing Arctic Monkeys' songs in a loop, swimming in our sweat and eating Ben & Jerry's out of the pints. Then we headed in front of a steel building that took the breath out of me.

"Is that The Energy Unit?"

"What used to be so. Yes son."

I was genuinely concerned for my mother, trying so hard to make us succeed in what she couldn't finish, while she's been skipping chemotherapy for a while, now. Why do we even keep on?

For the sake of Good, says Aurora.

My mom running our of breaths while climbing the stairs was the last straw.

"You shouldnt've come, mom."

"We need to make the introductions."

Cecilia's mom interfered.

"You need credibility, kids. I don't have that. You need her."

I nodded in sympathy.

In a huge room full of computers and hardware, five people were sitting. But what were they doing in an obsolete meeting room?

Then, I understood. My mother invited them.

Indignation was crystal clear in their expressions as soon as they saw Iris Arnolds.

"These kids need to revive the Unit."

"And call it The League." I said. All eyes turned to look at me, and Cecilia blinked and smirked at me.

My mom continued as if her boy wasn't being embarrassing.

" And Iris is here to say sorry. She has proved with sure evidence that Evan was the only one to be held responsible for the mess he caused in our departments. The one and only."

The two men and three women seemed to discuss vigourously.

"We'll send you a response over."

We got out to the fresh air, a thousand billion stairs later. My mom said that if their answer happened to be negative, we could totally start our own League with her help and Iris'. But now we had to shine more before becoming official and revealed. She reminded me of the weight of clumsiness in the eyes of those me might have to fight. Aurora snickered at me, soon laughing to no end.

That day, everthing seemed mapped and figured out. That ecstatic feeling of having no pain, or fear trigger.

Three days later, a vocal message on my mom's phone.

"We are The League, now. With all the ex-members of The Energy Unit. We work as a whole. Feel free to come to the meeting every Sunday. Call us back to get more details."

We got back to the main building later in the same day. A jacket guy in a skin-tight t-shirt asked Cecilia to go with him. My eyes seemed to boil when Ora yanked me from the sleeves of my shirt for us not to miss our appointment with the secretary. Our host was a petite lady with ebony dyed hair, iceberg blue eyes, and way too overlined velvet red lips.

"Please, take a seat."

Aurora sat with an impatient expression that was more piercing than the one she usually has.

"Tell me about your goals here a little more."

"Just use our abilities the right way, like any ethic person would. No energy goes to waste, I heard. Well let's not just conserve it, we'd better exploit it."

"Well said. Your friend now is with Mitch, the only other anticipator we've known. There are even rumors he's her dad."

"But..."

"Her mother didn't marry until recently. Plus, these genes are hard to find. Hence, at the end of the day, speculation stays speculation."

She received a phone call and swang to pick up with artificial grace.

"Can you please stop talking about my life behind my back?"

Aurora and I chuckled a little too loud. The secretary hung up.

"Look, do you think you'll be much of an asset to us?"

I decided to unleash the Gargantua within.

"Do YOU think you'll be anywhere close to an asset to US? I mean, we actually refounded the organization."

"That's a statement of truth", said Aurora. I liked it when she backed me up.

"Would you please leave?"

"Sure. It was starting to smell fake between these four walls anyway."
