The Rise Comes Before The Fall

“...are you even listening to me?” I mimicked my mom’s words on the side, making my beloved choke a little from the glass of milk he was drinking. This made me laugh, thus angering my mother even more. “Are my problems nothing but a joke to you?!"

“No mum, but–”

“That’s just what I needed, my own daughter mocking me when I’m so close to a panic attack! You're an ungrateful child. How did I raise such an ass?”

My frown deepened and I was about to scream at her when he snatched my cellphone from my ear. I looked up to find him smiling and placing the offending item over his own ear.

“Hello there, mother-in-law. How are you?” I heard cursing from the other side of the line before he handed me the phone back. When I checked, the line was already dead.

As always, my mother had hung up on him. That was her way of showing her disapproval of my relationship and upcoming wedding with –in her own words– ‘a man that would never amount to anything.'
